Essentially if you're gonna say people died because of the IRA, you might wanna follow that to its logical conclusion and wonder why the IRA existed and whose fault that might be.

Because a favourite tactic of bad countries is to point at violent political opposition to them and say "look at this unprecedented violence" as if paramilitary organzations just spring up out of nowhere for no reason.

That's the issue there though, if you go to the original definition as applied to the Jacobins, it's a broad "deliberate commission of an act of violence to create public fear through the suffering of the victims in the furtherance of a political or social agenda", which can absolutely include states.

And if you go by the common newspaper definition of "bad people we don't like doing violence" then it can absolutely include the British government.
