I’ve hit the point where I give people a plot synopsis of s1 and tell them to start on s2 when I recommend this show to friends, it’s bonkers how many people give up before the uptick in quality when I don’t.

I don't get these references but bringing petty showbiz feuds into the show seems absolutely fitting.

That's a bit much. The first few episodes of season 1 feel like a very different show than what it eventually becomes, but if you just tell them "Just stick with it until (insert episode where you feel it really leans in)" there's nothing that's just terrible and will bounce people off of the show in those early eps. I mean mayyyybe the creepy sex dynamic in Prickly Muffin might, but that's also the first episode where we really start seeing the damage Bojack and people around him are carrying.

No one on earth is too busy to "suffer"* through the first three episodes of Season 1, which starts to kick off in episode 4.

I mean I don't think it's so much for legitimate "feud" reasons (like one of the Bojack writers ran into Sam Esmail at a party and they exchanged fisticuffs or whatever) so much as it is "We want to poke some fun at the confusing/psychadelic/super-serious shows that they make." Malek would never agree to be on Bojack in the first place if any of the creators had legitimate beef with the guy who made him famous and runs the show he's still currently the star of.

Also, at this point in the show, I think it's easy to read him as this sort of "curmudgeonly anti-hero" type character - like, he says what you're thinking! That's a turn-off to a lot of people, especially since so many adult animated comedies lean on that character archetype ad nauseam.

Bojack's not that, of course. In fact, the whole rest of the show is about why being an rear end in a top hat like that is corrosive and unacceptable. It's an intentional subversion of the "funny sitcom rear end in a top hat" trope, where it spends a few episodes having him be the guy who cracks wise about the rubes and the simpletons, then begins to painstakingly demonstrate that all this anger comes from a place of deep pain and is hurting the people around him.

That’s what I originally thought too, but I’m 2-for-2 on season two recommendations and 0-for-3 starting from the beginning.

When I introduce someone to bojack, first I say "OK so the first 5-6ish episodes are kinda weak. Like they're not straight up bad, but they're not amazing. The rest of the show is amazing. Allow me to demonstrate." And then I show them the rotten tomatoes score for s1, followed by the score for every other season

It's a good laugh, and also I'm like 4 for 4 on that working

I recently binged through the entire series, and is it just me or is someone else somewhat annoyed that the writing turns into "depression porn" at the latter seasons?

I mean the earlier stuff was "bad things happen because BoJack is self-centered and impulsive person" and the latter series have been "nothing works in the end and BoJack gets blamed for everything because FY that's why".

The squares are all characters from the show which makes exactly zero sense. This seems lazy even as promotional Monopoly goes, and promotional Monopoly boards are society's second-greatest scourge (landing directly between the possibility that the casts of Entourage and Girls could have sex with each other and racism).

Like if I'm an agent and my recruited talent pool is Bojack's dead ex-friend, the woman who wants to murder Bojack for almost screwing her 17-year-old, and the heads of several rival talent agencies then something might be wrong.

edit: But it's okay because I can make(?) four shows that already exist? And then I guess I can build studios and production companies on top of Diane and that mouse Princess Carolyn was dating.

I guess it's entirely unsurprising, but still amazing to have something miss the point so badly. It would qualify as decent satire, if it wasn't done 100% without awareness.

In the last season or so, yeah...Diane turned really villainous and the writing seemed to turn against Bojack really hard. I don't like seeing characters suffer without agency, and that is what they did to poor Boj.

One of my friends got me some BoJack FunkoPops for Christmas. I love Bojack stuff and I was grateful for it, but man I hate those loving things. It might have been alright, but it was just Diane and Todd. I accepted the gift gratefully. It was the thought that counts.

The bad thought though is that I've recommended Bojack to all of my friends and none of them will watch it.
