I think what I'm enjoying the most about Jason Aaron's Avengers is that each issue feels really meaty. Like, I don't feel like I'm wasting money on single issues for once because it feels like a lot happens in each issue. Well, that, and this vampire war arc is pretty sick.

It's good, but not "Dracula shooting vampires from the moon" good, as far as Marvel vampire stories go.

Hey MoS, i saw your name in the credits while i was reading some ultimate comics last night and i was curious as to whether, as a professional letterer, you have any preference towards the all uppercase of comics at large or the upper-lower case used by the ultimate line (like, if one looks better to your eye or something)

There are more case-based typos to look out for (a lot of writers don't know how casing works, go figure), and if they write out their bold/italicized text in all-caps in the script, it's a lot more work for us to reformat. Additionally, the text has to be sized bigger, both for legibility's sake, and to keep ascenders and descenders from touching. But I heard recently that mixed-case lettering is much easier on readers with dyslexia, so I'm more open to biting that particular bullet now. I guess I like both, for different reasons.

Similarly, as a prolific letterer, are there things that writers do that make your job more difficult or certain tics that you wish they would avoid? I've been gradually getting my head around what to do and not do, but it would be interesting to hear it from your perspective.

Okay so as I was reading some books last night one thing that I found myself thinking about was thisMinister of Sound posted:if they write out their bold/italicized text in all-caps in the script, it's a lot more work for us to reformat. I guess I had just assumed that letterers would just read from the script page but manually add everything so I'm curious as to what the actual process is, do you in actuality normally just c/p from the script onto the page and you reformat from there or what do you mean?

Admiralty Flag posted:I thought Starkscream was, "Jarvis, I'm home, where's my loving [dinner/booze and call girls]*??!!!" Simon Spurrier has done something similar in his last three books (Spire, Godshaper, Coda), where if a character whispers or talks under their breath. The font size will shrink down, or the color of the font will go grey. It can be a little distracting at first, IMO.

A mistake I see in a lot of indie books (and have definitely been guilty of myself) is trying to emphasize "important" words to allow for... I dunno... speed reading?

Aside from rewriting half their scripts after we've already lettered them (most writers don't do this), it's just nitpicky grammatical stuff, most of which is just part of the job to me. But I remember you being really easy to work with, and I can't come up with anything I'd recommend to you specifically. Could we continue this chat via email or DMs? And should the lettering talk be moved to a different thread? I'm happy to chat about things, but don't want to derail the Marvel thread too much.

It was a bold move of Spencer to ask people to read Kraven's Last Hunt first (then again, comparions were going to be made regardless), but still, Hunted is a pretty drat good story. I'm worried about what happened/will hapen to Mary Jane, though.

If they’re already doing ads for the Venom thing, there’s no point in being cryptic in another ad. There’s no way it’s not for the Eternals. The stars are aligning for that franchise to come back in a big way.
