Maybe they're using some sort of content aware loadbalancer that calls out to a CDN behind the scenes? Idk but on the surface of it, it sure looks like not. Point being most of that is images, which you could have checked yourself by hitting Uhhhhh F12.

I mostly use Imgur not because of image leeching concerns, given i think that's far less of a problem nowadays, but because images without dedicated hosts tend to be unreliable. Not that there's a good history with that, waffleimages and all, but still. Websites have an exponentially greater amount of bandwidth to spare now.

CloudFlare is free, up to a point. (That said, I bet SA uses enough bandwidth to go over their free tier).

And you're right - the dynamic HTML code itself seems fairly bandwidth efficient, it's the static assets that are the chunky ones.

Usually it�s because the site isn�t being aggressive enough about cache management (such as using permanent caching for static assets and versioning the names). How often do you think allbuttons.gif changes, such that it needed to be downloaded in the trace above?

Excellent point, but that's configuration not code. Also weird that it does send it down the pipe every time, I don't do apache or whatever it is the kids think is hip these days but it shouldn't be that hard to fix ... surely?
