The Cheshire Cat posted:This kind of thing makes me more and more aware how far the gulf in our culture has grown. Like this isn't even a disagreement about the best way to solve problems that both sides acknowledge. This is both sides having sets of values so completely different to each other that they don't even agree on what the problems are. It's kind of scary knowing there are people around that see "immigration" as a problem that needs to be "solved" rather than like, a thing that (at worst) exists and in my more personal viewpoint is a net positive to society, and the most we should be arguing about are implementation issues. The frustrating thing, which you touch on in your last sentence, is that there are issues that need to be solved with regard to immigration, and we can't to the business of solving them because we have a bunch of loud assholes worried about seeing brown people and hearing different languages being spoken. For example, we can reasonably ask: how do we most effectively provide support for students who speak English or French as a second language to assure they're reaching their full potential and won't end up educationally and/or economically disadvantaged? But, no, we have a bunch of gammons yelling about "SPEAK ENGLISH DAMNIT!"

infernal machines posted:If that's where you stopped reading, fair enough. There were other examples as well. The first example was complete nonsense. The second example, as explained in detail above, is either a fabulation or a confabulation. Exactly how many times do you think it's necessary to check what a media critic says, only to find that it's nonsense, before it's okay to dismiss the guy as a hack looking for publicity? And I didn't stop after two. Before I posted I looked up this guy's history of articles. I found one that I was very familiar with. It involves him ripping the Sun and the Star for reporting on the fascinating history of Ms. Nadia Guo. Ms. Guo was disbarred by the Law Society of Ontario for (hilariously) unprofessional conduct. She also worked as an escort at all times - and the Law Society explicitly ignored that while deciding she had to be disbarred. The Sun and the Star reported on Ms. Guo and her disbarrment, and chose to include mention of her escort history. I mean really, it wasn't history, because she continues to advertise her services. Anyway, Mr. Goldsbie decided to rip the meida for doing that, notwithstanding that Ms. Guo is proud of what she does (she said so to both the Star and the Sun).

So what's everyone's plans for the weekend? I just booked myself into a lovely overnight stay at the emergency room because some rear end in a top hat hit me with his car as I was crossing at an intersection.

I figure I'm just going to be stiff for the next week, considering I stood up, told the driver he was a loving idiot before he drove off and then walked home to call an uber. My shoulders are aching a bit and my right leg is gonna be bruised, but I'm still in one piece and more annoyed than in pain. In hindsight I should have made him stay or at least tried to get his plate number, but I was finishing up my shift, I was tired and I just wanted to go home so Im not exactly the sharpest right now.

Please tell us you at least filed a police report. Even if you think you feel fine now, it's common for the pain to get a lot worse after the adrenaline wears off and lovely drivers need to be held accountable.

I walked home after getting hit, called my mom and then took an uber to the hospital. I'm in Ottawa and the police station on Elgin is right across the canal from my house. Depending on how long I'm here tonight, I'll have to file the report in the morning but my mom wanted me to get checked out, so I'm doing that first.

Even if you feel great the next morning, file the police report. It matters tremendously for insurance purposes. You may not think you need it now, and we all hope you don't. But you might. So it matters. Especially the part where he drove off before you could get identifying information. Which is really important when you talk to the police, because they right it all down and then the insurers accept it as gospel whatever the actual truth is.

Well, going after kids is a solid conservative strategy. Basically most of what Ford has done this year in office is cut away at anything the youth had, opportunities to free post-secondary education, access to quality secondary education or elementary education or specialized education. Children's aid cuts, class sizes increases, dumb bans on phones that breed distrust and distract teachers. Cutting out kids from OHIP+ in some dumb analytics free move, like just any household can absorb such costs even with insurance in a way that doesn't just randomly harm the kid in some situations, just having all kids covered made sense. It's been a horrifying stirring to watch in Ontario, horribly sad to see them just go straight for the kids with machetes out, "efficiencies." I had a coworker on Friday crying next to me, because our benefits are so lovely and her child has very expensive medication. So a cost that was covered under OHIP+ was forced to be covered under hers, which is a large burden on her family now. Syfe fucked around with this message at 03:43 on Mar 17, 2019 |

I contend that there should be a maximum wage(which could maybe be tied to company profits, ergo it can raise and so do employee wages, but there has to be some other use for money than just allowing it to goto rich fucks. While right now a worker might a one-time bonus if the company does well, not even a raise), and also that worker wage is then tied to how much the CEO makes, so if your CEO makes x amount more, every employee must make x amount more too. If the company is doing well, everybody should benefit goddamnit. There needs to be something other than the vacuum to the top with many companies not even bothering to reinvest into the company itself. (I'm actually somewhat lucky in that the company I work for, does reinvest in it's workers and structure somewhat, but this is also a first for my employment history.) edit: sorry for the ranty quality of this post.
