Jesus Christ yeah, growing up poor can leave weird triggers in the back of your head, and whenever this happens on Bob’s Burgers, literally any plotline that might improve or at least help the family’s finances, Bob just hopes out of it and it’s devastating every time. I don’t understand who finds any humor is poor people continuing to be poor (I mean I guess besides the intended audience for FOX, LoL)

Homer takes a big interest in Bart's esports team so he can live vicariously through him and also win a bunch of money.

There's a song obsessive sports dads sing to Homer about how he should live through his kid. Tiger Woods' dad is in it but I dunno if it's a cameo or not.

The kids go to South Korea to compete in the world championships. Lisa and Marge tag along so she can learn how to make salt mandalas at a famous monastery. The exercise immediately teaches Marge and Homer the meaninglessness of striving for material gains, so Homer decides competition is pointless, so he shuts off the power right as Bart's team is about to win. The chaos that ensues is set to "Suicide is Painless" and I think the montage of riot police messing up the arena might be a riff on the MASH intro or something. Homer gets upgraded to first class on the ride home and that undoes his zen.

Ken Jeong has a 2-second cameo as a monk.

Martin doesn't sound like Martin anymore.

Lisa emphasizes a couple of times that Homer hasn't correctly grasped the philosophy. I think she even tells him he hosed up during the riot, but I dunno I was only half paying attention.

Shows do that to avoid having to keep any sort of continuity

Like the bob's burgers episode where they get a new couch that ends with them going back to the old one, or the many many many simpsons episodes that undo whatever changed by the end of the episode.

The couch one was really annoying. They really grasped at straws to make the family want their lovely old couch back, to the point of insulting the audience. I think show writers would be better off just avoiding these type of stories altogether. Bob's Burgers has done this a handful of times, like one where the restaurant sees a huge increase in business by adding some tacky theming, but Bob feels this is against his belief that the food should speak for itself and removes it, causing them to lose their huge influx in business.

Yeah, honestly I would prefer if most shows just didn't bother with those episodes if they aren't going to commit to the change.

This is actually becoming less of a thing. A lot of modern cartoons (kids' shows, perhaps weirdly, leading the way) are allowing pretty big status-quo changes to happen throughout a season, or from season to season, and they just run with it.

It's a level above most of the shows discussed here but Venture Bros is super continuity-heavy. The past couple seasons had the main characters become wildly rich and they pretty much rebooted the show to accommodate the changes

Mentally going through the list of shows I would cite as examples, and I'm forced to conclude that really the modern definition of "sitcom" is "show where the status quo doesn't change"

King of the Hill had a good number of examples of major changes that stuck. Off the top of my head: Bobby/Connie dating and then later breaking up, Nancy ceasing John Redcorn's headache treatment to reconnect with Dale, the entire Lucky story arc, Cotton's death, Joseph's growth spurt, and I'm sure there's more.

^^^LuAnne's pregnancy and also Cotton's wife having Good Hank. King of the Hill's the best at sticking with continuity changes.

Peggy and Kahn both have several jobs over the course of the show, like Peggy becomes a real estate agent in later seasons and it sticks till the end of the show unlike that one-off episode with Marge.

American Dad had Jeff marry Haley and move into the Smith house (and later get kidnapped by aliens for a couple of seasons).

milhouse's parents getting divorced and staying divorced at the end of the episode was hilarious exactly because by sitcom logic it shouldn't have happened
