A long extension weakens may and gives more chance that something will change. A short extension does basically nothing.

A really short 2-3 week extension regardless of the MV3 outcome makes sense to me if the EU feels like it needs that extra time to prepare for No Deal and considers No Deal the likely option.

April 11th is the last date we can start the process of EU elections. That extension is basically saying "we'll give you a couple of weeks to decide if you're staying or going", while at the same time making No Deal very hard because May's left her push so late that we can't legally do it.

There is a cost associated with this farce dragging on for another two months, if it just ends with No Deal anyway.

If we go up to 22nd May and then try to extend again without having made any preparations for EU elections, it'll be too late. An earlier deadline means we can still get a long extension when the short one runs out.

reasonably sure that it'd be outweighed by continuing trade for the extra month or so, though i obviously can't say anything for certain

We'd have failed to prepare for the elections, making our then staying in rather difficult. It makes sense for them to insist A50 revocation is done by then or not at all. (Unless we agreed to prepare for elections, which May apparently won't do.)

It's costing the EU to leave Brexit as well you know.
The longer they delay it, the more they have to spend preparing for it.

Not surprised half the EU want the UK out now to get it over and done with.

May insisted she wouldn't take part in EP elections and that rules out anything post may 22, yeah. She's a liar and the tories have been prepping for them, so this is just the eu politely saying "ok have a think about that, ttyl, try not to get shot'

obviously this is in line with UK foreign policy interests and is loving terrible but it's also going to have a bunch of dipshit Labour cranks come out with some carelessly worded bollocks about the Israel lobby or whatever and the bad faith conversation will never stop

That would potentially be interesting as it would give a mechanism for parliament/labour to seriously undermine may.

it's a personal insult to may and a run around the FTPA

they know she's implied she'll resign if the delay lasts longer than june, and parliament has the power to call for EP elections. it's handing parliament a gun and giving them strong incentive to use it
