Her manga Links was really good though, and I've read Yukimura-sensei to Kei-kun but it was before I was tagging/rating stuff and I don't remember what I thought of it (probably means it's due for a re-read). https://mangadex.org/title/17883/taishou-otome-otogibanashi was recommended in this thread a while ago I think, or maybe on the historical thread, and I've had it in my queue for a while now and got around to it. I'm about 20ish chapters in, and didn't really know what to expect. I did know it was set in the 1920s, and that it followed a boy, injured and declared worthless and exiled by his father, and the girl who was bought by his father to take care of and eventually wed him. I certainly did not expect a hard shift a little over a dozen chapters in to the Kanto earthquake, while both of them are separated. I definitely didn't expect a wounded girl to be dropped by the family who were carrying her stretcher because the wind fanned the flames their way, as she died screaming and her family stood there helpless, praying and begging for forgiveness. I absolutely didn't expect it to then show her charred skeleton on the ground in the aftermath, as the characters walked along in the devastation of the ruins of tokyo. Jesus. Jaheeeeesus. It's good though. But. Jesus.

Yeah, it's general 1980s. At one point there's a Reagan inauguration headline (from the 1981 New York Times), later on there are some CDs from later in the 80s. The bartender recalls some big 60s/70s historic moments. In addition to the romance, it's part American pop culture, part history, part Amish 101. I liked it.
