The current republic was literally set up by a dude who was nicknamed "The General" and was "invited" to take power after an attempted military coup d'état (to defend the continued colonization of Algeria), so the authoritarian streak is really not surprising. They don't really talk about that episode in history or civics classes, funnily enough.

Gotta admit I got a pit in my stomach today. Not because of the military (that’s dumb lol) but I feel that with the extra police reinforcements, the new préfet being a oval office and Castaner’s job on the line the cops are going to receive stupid orders and be extra pissed at us. There’s also the fact that we’re going to be in fewer numbers than last week and shouldn’t count on a black bloc to push back. At least I’m not going alone.

The protest ended up being pretty peaceful, we didn’t see any cops for most of the day. Felt good! Pretty big turnout as well in Paris, Montmartre and the Sacré Cœur were packed: https://twitter.com/_max_lp/status/1109464898009001984?s=21 Had a nice little improvised picnic there, good change of pace from the usual game of cat and mouse. (or duck and cover, I’m not specist) A group managed to hang their banner from the top of the Sacré Coeur and received some mighty cheers from the crowd. https://twitter.com/moadab_rtfr/status/1109465891773865985?s=21 Things did not go as well in other cities like Nice, where an old lady got hit by a CRS charge and suffered head trauma. She is now in a coma. The cops refused to let street medics through to assist her. https://twitter.com/attac_fr/status/1109727319160164352?s=21 https://twitter.com/legneral2/status/1109446692045246465?s=21 On the other hand they did let a medic assist one of their colleagues suffering from a cardiac arrest. I can’t find more about him right now. https://twitter.com/micronautsmars/status/1109689974880915456?s=21
