This episode's got some stuff in it that was real good, but it took too long to get to and some of the scenes made no goddamn sense where they fit in the final cut. I liked what they were trying to do but it felt miserably paced.

I liked the first episode this season, but that one was really just spinning it's wheels.

Ian "It's just tits and dragons" Mcshane is there until the money dries up I assume.

Last season was slow as poo poo too but it was more interesting and added good things. This was...what 12 pages and a backstory we didn't need?

The scenes where they were calling out Media were so disappointing because you know Gillian Anderson ain't gonna be there :sigh:

Yeah, like the bird.
I liked this episode. There was a bit to process from the last episode. Things happened, they might not feel relevant to book readers or whatever but there were a lot of character building moments. I'm sure shadow's backstory will matter later on. Looking forward to seeing what happens with the zorya sisters- does one of the others take the dead one's place or is a new god born?

You'd think that if Gaiman didn't like Lucifer he'd not guest star in an episode, yeah?

Oh he probably likes the show just fine. It's pretty fun as far as network shows go. It's just so obviously not directly based on anything he personally wrote.

Party Membership is a Democracy, The Weave is Not.

A fledgling vampire? How about a dragon, or some half-kobold druids? Perhaps a spontaneous sex change? Anything that can happen, will happen the results will be beyond entertaining.

This version of Shadow makes even more sense with the back story than the book version. In the book, and in the TV show until now, he's just been a blank slate follower who lost everything and was supposed to have nothing distracting him from finding a new belief in Wednesday. But in the TV version now, hes all that plus someone who will fight for the underdog and hates bullies. The old gods are underdogs so he's solidly in their corner until the end of time, basically. The new gods will never turn him.

Yeah, some people are saying they didn't like the back story parts but I thought they added some much needed characterisation to shadow. It was a decent episode imo

The character was created by Gaiman in Sandman, but I don't think he had much involvement with the Lucifer comic, that was written by Mike Carey.

And that comic is hands down better than anything Gaiman's ever written. I'll absolutely fight for that statement.

I'll fight you!!! I really liked the Lucifer comics but boy howdy did they have some issues with coherence as it goes on. Which isn't to say Gaiman's stuff isn't without it's own issues but I'll still fuckin fight you.

That being said the fuckin TV show is a mess and while it's campy fun, it's also got a bunch of baggage from being sexist trash. But the biggest crime is that it's a dumb cop procedural.

Really I just kinda wish American Gods was... better? Like it's certainly got an aesthetic and it's neat, but it's only vaguely similar to the novel. That isn't necessarily bad but this feels kinda directionless. I might be misremembering, but didn't the Men In Black types not realize who/what they are or who/what Wednesday and World are? I was pretty sure that was an explicit point in the novel, that some of the New Gods and their henchmen weren't entirely self-aware.

Also Emily Browning is basically the perfect Laura Moon.

This. I'm the guy that watched the flashbacks in double speed. Not only was the pace slow, but there were entire sequences without value changes. Spinning wheels.

I've enjoyed the slow ride, but this was the first episode that felt like it was dragging to me.

Gillian Anderson left the show. She was recast, so they made it part of the story to explain the change.

It's as good and more focused because it doesn't have Gaiman's meandering bullshit, but it never would have existed without Sandaman paving the way.

As noted in the other reply, Gillian Anderson left the show (because why be in a show if it isn't going to be Bryan Fuller photographing her in beautiful locations?) but the storyline reason is that Wednesday inspiring Easter and then just battering the poo poo out of Mr. World with a single blow scared the gently caress out of her, as she thought Mr. World was unstoppable, so she's gone into hiding to figure out her next move.

I'm a mean one.
I think what pisses me off is how they’ve ham handedly handled the lack of Chenoweth and Anderson.

Reversing Ostara’s killing of all the crops makes NO sense. In the book, Ostara only even has one more appearance much much later on. Just reversing a giant cliffhanger plot point is SLOPPY.

And the drawn out Tech Boy scene was just... long... as someone said here prior, we know she’s not showing.

I was wondering what happened to that "all the plants died" thing. They just moved past it without even saying anything. When I saw that guy on the golf course, I thought they were finally covering it, and it was going to be his perspective of when all the plants died. Instead they just completely ignored it.

There is a travelling montage in episode one that shows the plants dying, and later in the episode there was a short mention in a newsreport about a blight going on (can't remember the exact wording). But given the speed the plants have been shown dying at, I would think it would be affecting most of the US by now.

TV is like bathing. Most shows are your quick morning shower - it gets the job done, and is enjoyable, but ultimately forgettable and formulaic.

This show is the two-hour bath with bubbles, candles, and your favorite music. It won't serve the same purpose (get your hair & body clean/tell a simple story in a straightforward manner), the whole point is to be immersed in the experience.

I admit it's not for everybody, but I love it. I love that the showrunners (past and present) give so much attention to every frame of the show, I love the way they've captured the weirdness without making it look stupid, I love that the minor characters are now fleshed out in ways I couldn't have dreamed of when reading the book.

I love that we get the comedy of luckless Sweeney (omg so perfect) against the horror of Laura's disintegration, and the WTF creepiness of Argus and the douchiness of Tech and the romance of Salim & the Djinn and just so many genres all coming together.

And Ian loving McShane. Gods drat do I love me some Ian loving McShane. Dedicating these deaths to Ostara, giving a car a Viking funeral, "you look at me like I hosed your mother" oh holy hell, he's the gift that keeps on giving.

So yeah, I probably have terrible taste in entertainment, but I'm all in for this.
