bloop.
New Joker movie looks like a really interesting take on the comic formula. Got strong vibes of Nightcrawler from it, a kind of twisted rags to riches story.

Until now I thought this was going to be about Jared Leto's Marilyn Manson Joker so definitely more interested in seeing it now than before! Is it going to be part of the main DC -shitshow canon or more a standalone thing?

Eventually, for sure.

I genuinely wonder if they have any apprehension about Wolverine. With Spider-Man, the character was really ineptly rendered by a bunch of lukewarm Sony movies nobody loved...so "getting it right" was some goodwill expectation fans had from the start. Bouncing him off Iron Man and doubling down on the jokes was a safe bet. But for all that FOX did wrong with X-Men, those movies were very successful at iconically defining Wolverine. And Hugh Jackman was Wolverine for literally 18 years; re-casting and re-conceiving the character would be like replacing Robert Downey Jr.

Disney being risk-averse, I imagine what they'd do first is aim for the IP that people already want to see "done better." Fantastic Four, the classic X-Men team (Cyclops, Iceman, Angel, etc.) Wolverine's unavoidable, but I suspect they want his shallow grave to cool for a bit.

Uhh, because Disney owning a sizable chunk of mainstream media is not really a good thing. If the MCU is any indication of how Disney plans to approach the deployment of its newly acquired IPs (and it will be), I'm not really looking forward to the inevitable homogenization of pop culture. But sure, having Wolverine join the Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is totally worth the price of oh, I don't know, people losing their jobs over the merger AND mainstream media monopolization. Totes worth it cuz gotta have my superheroes together on the big screen.

Marvel movies have also been poo poo. Bland poo poo. So they'll be mildly better, and bland, at the small cost of a single company owning half the valuable IPs in the world. Brilliant.

That and I just think it leads to worse movies. And the X-Men series already has plenty of bad movies in it. I just don’t think the good ones (Logan, DoFP, uhh maybe X2 if it still holds up) would have ever been allowed to exist had X-Men been with Marvel/Disney to begin with. For all the hubbub from some people about what an accomplishment the MCU is, it’s also an incredibly restrictive environment. This is basically why I’ve never been a fan of it or any other modern day “cinematic universes”.
