Mina of course gets lots of attention, and for good reason, but I've always been more of a Major person. Major seems like one of those dogs from the talking animal movies that acts as the dignified pack leader and gets the others home safe when they get lost.

You buy them a million cat beds, some of them electrically heated, and still they squish the pillows into weird shapes.

For people who aren't into classic movies, Sanjuro is the name that Toshiro Mifune's(iconic Japanese actor) character uses in one of his movies. It's made clear to the audience though that Sanjuro isn't his real name and that he is in the habit of just breezing into town, helping people, and leaving without anyone even knowing who he is or where he came from. Appropriate name for that cat, I'd say.

You're the best. Actually, I appreciate the farm realities from a position which is half-familiar, and half-alien to yours. I grew up in an Indian village - not just on the other side of the world but the other end of modernity. Completely different animals and crops and lifestyles...and tiny, furiously tended sustenance farms, clay houses filled with animals and hay and seed gourds, etc etc. But - not to romanticize either that context or yours - there's some fundamental fellow-feeling that I get out of your farm. Some shared heritage from the original peasants and shepherds (Also we had no concept of working dogs, just packs of pariah ones)
