Rogue Trader dreads had bases. Granted my RT dread is like the size of a Primaris Aggressor but on a bigger base. And a square base at that.

I don't have a great pic of mine, but I love that you can fill up the base under them with stuff and it looks cool.

I'm going to go further with my next one, have the legs at different elevations, climbing over terrain.

Nice colour scheme!

Yeah digging rocks out of the garden that look the right scale is the best part of basing the crawlers.

There's something oddly satisfying about gluing rocks, priming and then painting them all to look real again. You'd never know they weren't real fake rocks.

Thanks! Those are mostly real fake rocks, sadly. I do think I'm starting to like basing and terrain building as much or more than model painting.

That’s a 2nd edition Ork dread, which came with a base. The promotional photos on the 2nd ed box covers had them unbased, but they came with bases.

This is an RT era ork dread btw.

Thanks for the era correction. Maybe they did square bases at the start of 2nd and dropped it. By the time I started ~1998, there were no bases in the Space Marine dread kits, and there was no base when I bought my 3rd edition ork kit - Killer Kans had them though. The Space marine dreads were stable even on a carpeted floor and didn't need a base. I seem to remember my ork dread falling over a lot though.

As someone who was staff throughout that time period, can confirm Sharks Dont Sleep is right - Box art for Dreads had them with no base, but they all came with square large monster Fantasy Bases (Like Bikes kept being boxed with cavalry bases with the slots) I think up until the plastic dread.

Fun little aside, the Contemptor pattern dreadnought was actually first introduced to tabletop waaay back during 2nd edition - but not for 40k proper, it was for Epic/Space Marine and appeared in this box set, which I think I still have somewhere.

Yeah, I understand why they based the Dunecrawler since it avoids a ton of the issues that the Triarch has. I'm not sure why they didn't add in a "Draw a box around the legs, that's the base" rule like they did with the FW big spider.

MY LIFE FOR YOU!
Bases for Dreads was a thing, but the hobby was a lot looser back then so it seems like it was done more aesthetic and stability reasons than for measuring purposes. A lot of the old WD army pics from back in the day have the SM dread on a base while the Ork Dread is baseless.

I can see it being inconsistent, I remember my 3rd edition Ork Dred having a base since I ran it for a while with just the feet glued to it since it took me a while to actually get the model built and stay built.

Second dark talon isn't bad, but to be honest, I'd drop both plus the other squad of hellblasters and add ravenwing (a couple of attack bikes, a talonmaster, and some black knights easily fill it out)

I like that one dread is on a sideways cavalry base. The others may be on custom bases as IIRC GW didn't start producing 60mm bases like that until a lot later on? (probably Warlord Titan bases with the gaps filled in)

Personally I prefer vehicles on bases, it helps tie them with the army and the extra height helps alleviate the scale difference (aka 'no way can 10 marines fit in a rhino'). I just haven't gotten around to figuring out the best fits for my Trukks and Wagons (probably need a custom size for the latter).

Thanks! I usually play Ravenwing, haven't had much luck with attack bikes. I'm pretty sure there will be at least 1 Castellan there and whilst I love my black knights they don't half get smashed. Saying that, Sammy is great... argh choices.

I just use attack bikes for cheap fillers and maybe mortal wounds will hellfire. Plain old ravenwing bikers are alright, too, since the beta bolter rules.

The ravenwing specialist detachment is ok, and splitting between BK and hellblasters gives me options for dealing with hordes and multiple possible targets for wftda. Even without sammael, a double assault cannon talonmaster does work.

I'd worry that the Azrael castle you've got isn't going to be mobile enough

Klopp's 13pts clear thanks to video ref

I've finally put together enough Orks for a small 500pt trial game against my friend's Tyrannids:

(apologies for the disgusting state of my desk)

It's a Warboss and Weirdboy as HQ, 2x 10 Grots (one with a Runtherd) and 1x 20 Boyz (all with choppas and sluggas) with a Boss Nob, then 1x unit of Nobz with various melee units. There's not a lot of dakka, so my plan is to get up in the 'Nids faces and hit them until they die. Seems pretty orky.

From here (after I sit down and paint... 25 odd orks) I'll probably get another 20 boyz and consolidate the grots into one unit (thus getting the bonuses for all three units), then probably some sort of heavy support to add the dakka? I'm open to suggestions on what that should be though!

What are you looking for in your heavy support? Do you want something relatively cheap that hits hard in melee with options to have some shooting? Get a Deff Dread or two and equip them how you see fit.

If you want a heavier vehicle, the Gork/Morkanaut kits are a really fun build, make a great centerpiece unit, and also provide either decent anti-tank shooting and decent melee (Morkanaut, who can also take a Kustom Force field for a 9" 5++ aura) or withering anti-infantry fire and highly effective melee (Gorkanaut).

If you want to go maximum Dakka and don't mind assembling a ton more infantry models, getting a bunch of Loota's is a very popular strategy for throwing dice at the problem of infantry screens or mid-toughness vehicles (T6 or less).

If you want a transport AND a gun platform in one handy package, get a Battlewagon! It isn't the best gun platform but it can provide some additional shooting while carrying 20 orks around (like your Nobz for instance).

Your dad's in the Russian Mafia, that's the jumpoff!
I recently played a 1750 point game, featuring Ork on Ork violence between two vaguely similar lists!

I wrote up a battle report about it with some decent photo's. I don't have a blog and don't want to dumb a ton of text into a post so I hope a Google Doc link is ok.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1GwDo1IOdb7pidGe7USsjg8CYQXalIJOlm3f9IWbpGtE/edit?usp=sharing

My takeaways from the game:

-Tankbusta's are winning their place in my lists. Even if you score just two or three hits on a model, they'll usually push out good damage from that, and they're even good against bikers and things that aren't vehicles if you reroll 1's with them.

-Souped Up Shokka is...well i need to play with it more. It did some really good damage, but i'm not sure it's worth the -1 CP and the free relic slot, for my playstyle at least. It's fun to see the rolls go your way on it though.

-Gorkanaut deep-striking is so drat effective and i know i'll change my tone when i fail a charge with it and it dies the very next turn but man can this thing dish out the pain consistently. I do wish it had a little more resilience, like the Ramshackle ability that trukks gets, or some kind of FNP or Invuln save. Or i just need to bring another Big Mek.

-Shoota boyz are alright versus orks! Not sure i'd take them versus another faction!

-Dakkajets are also earning their place in my lists with how well they've dealt with otherwise out of reach threats. Being able to fly up to my opponent's Loota castle, outmaneuver his screen, and take them out felt great and showed me how versatile they can be.
