A contract signed by a minor is not binding!

There was also a lot of sense that doctors of the time were geniuses who always knew what they were doing, and they willingly played into that for their ego. Robert Liston was famous for his skill in severing limbs and would challenge students watching to time him, holding the bloody knife between his teeth when he needed both hands. He turned his skill into a spectacle even if it meant not following sound practice.

There's a possibly apocryphal story of him having the only surgery with a 300% mortality rate: his patient died of gangrene after having his leg severed, he accidentally chopped off an assistant's fingers (who died of gangrene), and his wild slashing cut the coat of a spectator who dropped dead of a heart attack from fright. There's a lesser known case where, upon being challenged whether a young boy had an artery aneurysm or a skin abscess, impatiently slashed it open and very quickly discovered that it was the artery.

Liston also leaned hard into sterile operating theatres and anaesthesia when they were introduced to him, and treated poor people for rates they could afford. He's probably not the best example for out of touch arrogance.

If I was to have a limb amputated at a time without anesthesia I would sure hope that the surgeon was as fast as possible. I think that you're viewing him from an extremely modern perspective.

Which is just the tip of the much bigger iceberg of people who have instinctive defensive reactions when you poo poo on nazis. Which morphs into "Nazis and Communists are both as bad > Hitler did some good things and not all nazis are bad > Communists are still bad

Reminder that 9% of Americans think it's okay to hold neo-Nazi views. That's 22 million people, and you can bet they're mostly white men so if your dad is a white American there's a higher than 9% chance that he thinks it's okay to be a Nazi.

I’m losing my brother to these brian worms and it’s just as depressing as the stories linked. I gave him the benefit of the doubt for a long long time because he’s always been that kinda poo poo-stirring devil’s advocate playing “I just like arguing big ideas” forever-mentally-a-teenager type, which was fine before Trump got elected, but I logged onto his YouTube once by mistake and it was full of nothing but right-wing talking heads and Pewdiepie, so.

Here’s something I found on FB from an ex coworker who is always sharing the precocious things her two year old most definitely actually said, and not something she made up for social media points.

The speed at which surgery could be done was one of the biggest factors in patient survival rates. Liston was a pioneer really at the forefront of surgery, he was the first surgeon in Europe to perform an operation with anesthesia. We still use some of his inventions today.

My response to the "Not everything Hitler did was bad, therefore not all Nazis are bad. But Communists are still always bad." is the 99% literacy rate in Cuba. i.e. "Cuba has 99% literacy, therefore communism is not always bad. But Nazis are always bad."

No, it's not a good argument. Yes, it is a false equivalency. But it's a comeback at least.

I've seen that kind of comeback used before, and it's rarely effective. It's begging for a counter-comeback like "Oh great, so they can all read the propaganda newspaper and censored internet while they rot in a mud hut because the economy is so terrible, and they can read the warrant that the secret police brings when they get arrested for wanting something more luxurious than a mud hut"

A good comeback would have to be along the lines of how at least it's a system that's trying to make things better for all people, even if it fails because of external pressures and because too many people are too venal and greedy to buy into the idea of doing things for the benefit of others. But I don't know if such a comeback can be "snappy".

I don't know, I've been having a lot of trouble with this poo poo myself lately

So i want to get something straight once and for all and i would like it answered on this post and not in a private message because my issue is becoming a problem.

Whataburger claims that there are 36,864 ways to make a whataburger. Why is it that my way seems to be an issue in only a couple of your local establishments. Your companys issue is my request for toasted buns on the grill and not thru the machine. Your machine squashes the buns so instead of a burger, customers are given a flat bread sandwich. I want near picture perfect burger. I have worked in burger establishments in my lifetime and i know squashing the burger is a lack of care from either the equipment or mishandling from the employee.

Time and time again i am told that whatabuger cannot toast buns on the grill due to health code. That the grill doesnt get hot enough to kill possible bacteria. I find that completely laughable since your grill obviously is hot enough to at least cook ground beef to a minimal internal temp but your staff is claiming it cant kill any bacteria during toasting buns.

I have also contacted our local health department numerous times and they insist that it is not an issue. In fact, im a chef who is servsafe certified and teaches culinary and i know that its not an issue via servsafe which is the nations standard.
Furthermore, there are countless burger joints across this country that grill toast, buns, etc on the same grill and there isnt an issue with people becoming ill due to toasted buns. I want an answer as to whether toasted buns is part of the 36,864 ways to make a whataburger and if it isnt, why not since obviously it should be. Toasted buns on the grill is as old as the creation of the burger itself. If there are really 36,864 ways to make a whataburger, then toasting the buns on the grill and not thru the machine is mine!

In all seriousness, their policy of not putting buns on the grill is likely to prevent cross-contamination of wheat onto the grill.

I don’t think it’s about emotional response as much as it’s “Thinking and having empathy instead of being told everything to feel is too hard! You’re placing a burden on me!”
