I'm a (3 star) Highway Star.
My friend and I went to Takeover and the G-1 Supercard over the weekend. I'm so glad we skipped out on Mania as a) that show was a slog and b) our backs were killing us alone from 2 days in stadium seating. How does anyone do like 4-5 days of that during Mania Weekend?

FWIW:

Takeover:

HM: War Raiders vs. Ricochet and Aleister Black - This was just a phenomenal opener with the four really playing well into how Black and Rowe/Hanson Ricochet pair up.

HM: Velveteen Dream vs. Matthew Riddle - While overshadowed by a lot of other matches this weekend, I thought this had the best storytelling of any match I saw.

MOTY: Walter vs. Pete Dunne - My sentimental pick for match of the night. The first few minutes were a bit off, but after that I loved every second of these two trying to murder each other dead.

MOTY: Johnny Gargano vs. Adam Cole - Stated off a little slow, but that third fall was an absolute banger.

G-1 Supercard:

HM: 30-Man Honor Rumble - Look, this might not have been the prettiest thing or the most technical thing, but holy hell was the crowd nonstop marking out for 40+ minutes. The roof just about blew off the place when Muta came out.

MOTY: Will Ospreay vs. Jeff Cobb - Ospreay continues to be one of the best lightweights to work with big men, and Cobb managed to make the beating he took believable despite the size difference.

WMOTY: Kelly Klein vs. Mayu Iwatami - Brutal. Just brutal. This felt like a relic of a decade ago when women's matches were clunky bathroom breaks It was especially glaring after how good the women's six-man tag opener was (I guess this might not have aired).

HM: Zack Saber Jr. vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi - This was exactly what you'd expect from these two.

MOTY: Kota Ibushi vs. Tetsuya Naito vs. their necks - The match of the weekend IMO. Holy hell was that awesome. The only thing that held it back from perfection was a handful of sloppy spots.

MOTY: Kazuchika Okada vs. Jay White - My friend and I kept joking throughout this "remember that time Jay White had that one bad match with Tanahashi and everyone wrote off his career?" What a difference a year makes. Despite the abbreviated run, White proved here why Gedo sees him as the future of the company. The crowd hung on every minute of this match despite the fact we were five hours into the show.

Wrestlemania:

WMOTY: Baron Corbin vs. Kurt Angle - Look, I am a full proponent of going out on your back, but if you're going to have Angle do the job for an up-and-comer, you don't pick a heatless Baron Corbin for it. This was just a big F-U to fans that were clamoring for an Angle vs. Cena match.

MOTY: Daniel Bryan vs. Kofi Kingston - Nothing else on that 7-hour slog even compared to this. A perfect conclusion to the Kofi storyline.

pretty fucking embarrassing to watch
Using my work from home day to catch up on Mania (and also do work bar the stuff that grabs me) and:

MOTYC: Daniel Bryan (c) vs Kofi Kingston, WWE Championship, Wrestlemania 35

This is the best WWE main roster match in an incredibly long time; possibly since Punk/Cena although I'd have to rewatch that. I'm also argue that it is better than any NXT match since Gargano/Almas. Its the Bryan Danielson at his ROH peak against an incredibly over, very talented firey babyface. The crowd were living and dying on every near fall at the end, you had a heel interference spot which actually added to the match in my eyes (usually I hate them; that one I think worked because it wasn't overdone and it didn't make Kofi look silly like they all tend to do) and it all built up to a perfect finish and the great post-match. If I were to give it a star rating I'd say 4.5; third best match of the weekend for me. One thing that I thought was GREAT that might have not been noticed by other people were Big E and Xavier Woods on the outside during that match: it shows the value that good allies can have on a match even in a singles match. There are NXT matches that are technically better and athletically more impressive but a good story can counterweight all of that and this is a perfect example of that.

Only just finished that match and everything else has been... good but not great. I'm working so I've not been watching intently but nothing really grabbed me other than some spots in the Miz match.

Corgis love bread. And Puro

WMOTYC
Daichi Hashimoto vs Takashi Yoshida - All Japan Pro Wrestling - 4/4/19

This might be a little harsh but it was just so dead. The first match on the first night of AJPW's big singles tournament Champions Carnival, you'd expect a bit of fire but this was so lifeless. There's undoubtedly worse matches this year but few if any will be this boring.

HM
Atsuhi Aoki vs Kento Miyahara - All Japan Pro Wrestling - 4/4/19

This was more like it. The Triple Crown champion against a former Junior champion who is a late replacement for Kengo Mashimo. The result is never in doubt but Aoki puts up a firey challenge. Perhaps Kento underestimated him but he was certainly on the back foot for long periods. A simple, classic wrestling story executed really well.

MOTYC: Tsukasa Fujimoto vs. TinTin the Giant Panda - Ice Ribbon (3/31)

Backstory: Tsukasa Fujimoto won the women's wrestler of the year award from Tokyo Sports this year. During the Awards Ceremony, Tokyo Sports photographers caught her kissing popular wrestler and giant panda, Andreza the Giant Panda. Andreza's scorned wife TinTin, challenged Fujimoto to a match at Ice Ribbon's Korakuen Hall show and attacked her during a press conference causing Tsukka to be hospitalised.

It's really funny, and also Fujimoto is such a good wrestler that she pulls some generally innovative spots out of a guy in a 7 foot panda costume. The emotional climax of the match is something you need to experience for yourselves.

I don't mind keeping up with the current stuff but it's becoming a minefield going back through older matches in addition to that, so I'll do this 2-3 times during the year, probably again roughly around the end of the G1 and then again at the end of the year to clean things up. OFFICIAL RACIST
WMOTC: Lacey Evans vs Natalya, RAW 4/15/19

Crowd was absolutely dead the whole time, Lacey pretty much never sold, and everything she did looked like poo poo.

If it isn't worst match of the year, its gotta be up there for most boring match at least. I'm pretty sure the majority of that match was restholds by Lacey.

I'll second this. Lacey immediately no-sold the Sharpshooter and then shortly after did a jumping moonsault.
