Chuck was fine, but it fell in this weird period where TV shows were allowed to be more ambitious but networks weren't fully committed. So it was always kind of a mixed bag. I think if it had come out a decade later it would have been better. It's a lot better than Scrubs though.

Yeah, its post-season 2 slump is credited mostly to a late renewal not retaining writers.

Chevy Chase was in the last few episodes of that season as a villain (right before he was cast on Community), and nailed it.

Jeffster are great. And Tony Hale was the best "annoying non-spy enemy" for Chuck.

Jeffster became a little much after a while, but the show gave them a good ending, too.

Tony Hale's character also got a good ending, too.

Chevy Chase’s late-career turn to villain works because he was a villain in real life the whole time.

Chevy Chase was the villain in one of those terrible Hallmark Christmas movies. For the first 85 minutes of the movie I figured he just put on a poorly fitting suit and read some lines in a random office building because he didn't have scenes with any of the other actors. But no, in the last 5 minutes he shows up at the party in Christmas Town.

Chevy Chase managed to be hated by everyone while not doing anything particularly bad and being reasonably talented. He's just got that awful of a personality.

I like that apparenlty Chase was so hard up for cash he would show up in a Hallmark movie called "Christmas Town." I'm guessing he was the evil developer that wanted to turn the titular Christmas Town into a oil refinery?

He owned the company that bought the money-losing outerwear maker (named...Outwear) and was planning on shutting it down.

It also started Howard Hesseman and Morgan Fairchild so you know it was good.

In real life or in the movie? He’s definitely said and done some evil things. Not Roman Polanski-evil, but trying to get people fired and starting fistfights. He got fired from Community for yelling the n-word all the time and telling everyone who complained that he was allowed because Richard Pryor gave him permission.

Chase is a miserable person to be around, but usually it takes a lot more for Hollywood to turn against you. For someone who hasn't been caught molesting or killing someone, he's surprisingly disliked. Even rude and vindictive Hollywood actors have somebody who likes them. It's notable enough that there was even an article about how no one wants to work with Chevy Chase.

Usually when you're the star of a beloved series or cult classic people like you despite all the bad things you do.

Comedy Central did a roast of him in 2002. Apparently it was really bad. Normally people get up and make fun of you, but a lot of the people were absolutely merciless. So much so that Comedy Central has said they'll never re-air it.

Even the IMDb trivia page says:

IMDb Trivia posted:

According to Chevy Chase, he was truly shocked and hurt by the comments directed at him in the roast. As soon as the roast was over, Chase went straight to his hotel room and sank into a depression while Paul Shaffer comforted him.

IMDb Trivia posted:

This roast was particularly infamous because the jokes directed at Chevy Chase were especially pointed and mean-spirited, even by the standards of a roast.

He had done a roast in 1990 which was in good spirits and full of people he knew and got along well enough with. The 2002 roast was just a bunch of Comedy Central regulars just ripping into him as hard as they could.

He's a delight. I met him once. If he's putting on a front, he's dedicated. Thunder Bay (where he was born, and where I live) is extremely proud of him. The street that leads to our local auditorium is named after him, which resulted in Letterman doing a bit where he called our mayor trying to get a street.

That's the worst season of L&O, with Milena Govich playing an absolutely terrible junior detective. Chase still somehow saves that episode by being an over the top crazy man.

I remember one of the roasters being Stephen Colbert, and absolutely tearing into him.

According to this oral history, roasters usually meet-and-greet the roastee. Not in this case:

Jeff Ross posted:

I never watched it but, I remember asking Greg Giraldo why he didn’t think it went so well, and he said, “Well, none of Chevy’s friends were there.” I said, “Didn’t you even meet the guy beforehand?” He said, ‘No, no one introduced him.” And I remember thinking, “That’s where I would have come in. I would have set up the dinner for the comedians to meet Chevy, or I would have gone over before the show and had Chevy meet all the comedians before they start busting his balls.” I think we all learned a little bit more about how to produce these shows. It has to come from a place of affection and respect. It definitely hurt not to be there, but it was kind of a relief to have missed the bad roast.

Wish I could find a better version on Youtube, but The Situation from Jersey Shore's set at the Donald Trump roast -- which, to bring it back to the thread topic, has aged poorly given what we thought then versus know now about Donald Trump as president -- hits such a level of awfulness that it wraps around to being a fascinating train-wreck. He's just so bad.

I respect Shatner because I have to respect a man who made an entire career out of making fun of himself. He didn't really do much that was all that important other than Star Trek but then realized there was a lot of humorous poo poo about himself and his life and just loving ran with it.

Leary wanted one and hosed off and did his own when the Friar's Club said no. Now it's just whatever D list celebrity wants to have one and fill the dias with people they barely know.
