Like what have I misunderstood, now I'm genuinely curious? It seems to me that she is directly saying that degrowth means immiserating the third world.

Amber's point was that too many people are cool with goofy old men groping women for that to stick, and that Biden is literally horrible enough on all meaningful subjects that this should not even have to be a factor in ruling him out. None of that was implied but stated as clearly as it could have been without bullet points and a powerpoint presentation.

Honestly, I was a bit put off by their stance on guns. I don't think any left movement stands a chance against a government, and that should not be the goal. But I do believe we are quickly nearing a point in which arming the left in some capacity is going to be necessary, as a safeguard against persecution by empowered, hostile chuds.

This is a direct if-then statement where she says if you support degrowth (a thing I support and have organized for for the past 3 years), then you are asking people in already bad conditions to also take the burden of degrowth. I really can't wrap my head around how you don't see this as a criticism of degrowth.

The take is bad and was unique among the Chapo crew, and talking about Biden at the end of this primary will require, you know, the primary to start so I don't think it's turned it to be true! Because it means degrowing the first world! It means people in America and Western Europe deliberately decreasing the rate of GDP growth. This doesn't mean poor people not working, as it should be implemented with a jobs program that actually looks a lot like the green new deal. The top 10% of income earners worldwide are responsible for 90% of carbon emmisions. On an individual level, frankly, an individual in a third world country basically doesn't emit carbon. A wealthy American, one who has private jets and poo poo, not merely 'comfortable' emits millions of times more CO2 than an average third world person. That's not an exaggeration. Making their lives worse will do nothing positive or negative for carbon at all.

So why did she say I support making 3rd world lives worse? Do you not understand what she said?

And in terms of the guys they were interviewing, holy poo poo I totally disagree with them. We can't have steaks and cars and the luxurious excess we live in now. It doesn't mean everyone living like a pauper, of course. But to use steaks as a specific example, America uses a full third of it's land area as pasture land, destroying an almost cartoonish amount of natural resources for cattle production that will not be possible if we are to actually attempt to halt climate change.

Hell yeah make their lives better! Reverse the crimes of the past 400 years. The Sunrise Movement works with Indian communists on the reg. The whole point of socialism regarding climate change, and this is a direct quote from Will here, is that we have enough Stuff for everyone. But a few people are hoarding a shitload of Stuff. To resolve this issue requires deliberate degrowth, and one of the reasons why is specifically so people who do not have Stuff can grow into having it.

i think she was speaking to the belief that lots of degrowthists have that degrowth will be foisted onto the people in the developing world

also i don't think the authors of the book were saying that literally nothing would change, just that it isn't going to be a miserable existence and huge downgrade for most people, who already don't get to enjoy many of the benefits of empire

They specifically use steaks and cars in the podcast, I'm not pulling my examples out of the air here. We're not going to be able to maintain our current levels of production in virtually any capacity and halt or much less reverse climate change.

^ Earlier in the episode she makes a snide comment about how she thinks socialism in one country could work, she even comments about how there is a rainbow of opinions on the recording couch. Socialism in one country was, famously, one of the defining aspects of the Stalinist state. Therefore I called her a Stalinist. I listen to the podcast, I'm not making a strawman or whatever, I listened to what they said and disagree with what they said.
