I was actually going more for "Fry was a relateable everyman protagonist that the target audience could identify with vs elfo who is a loving keebler elf from elf-town" I mean you're right that on closer inspection their relationship was problematic but at least they got the writing 101 basics down

The clingy loser getting a will-they won't-they romance was always a terrible trope and a show written for 2018 really ought to know better. The female griffon being called "bird-man" and by male pronouns was also super off-putting.

I’m not exactly complaining, Hulu has great stuff, I just didn’t know about it. Basically if you pay for cable for any reason other than sports, you’re a baby boomer.

Yeah, after watching Season 1 for the first time in at least 20 years it was a nice treat. Not amazing like the seasons that followed, but the only real stinker was the one where Bart goes to France.

If you want to see what people refer to as classic Simpsons greatness, nearly every single episode from seasons 3 to 7 are guaranteed optimal viewing. Season 2 is also really good, but it is not quite in the same tone and style of what people consider "classic Simpsons." I believe season 8 is also firmly in the classic era, but some do not, as you can see the very early signs of bad Simpsons emerging. Season 9-12 seemed bad at the time but are okay compared to almost everything that came after, though they are still more bad than good and very distinctly different from the previous seasons. Season 1 should not be watched by anyone who is unsure of what "classic Simpsons" is, it's worth watching but only for perspective.

Season 1 is way more of a mixed bag than it gets credit for tonally. "Bart the Genius" "The Call of the Simpsons" "The Telltale Head" & "The Crepes of Wrath" are pretty canonical episodes that have a lot of good material, and "Life on the Fast Lane," is just a loving good episode and I've quoted the poo poo out of it for 20 years.
