What needs to really happen is that a creator/rights manager needs to be assigned to every work even one created by corporation. They can be obligated to hand over the rights away, but as soon as they die, the copyright is only valid for 10 more years. We also need to get rid of the dumb bypassing DRM law.

Jeza posted:So rich people can basically protect their copyright practically ad infinitum and poor people lose anything in about 5-10 years. Sounds about right. The intent was that you only maintain copyright on things that are still making you money. Just because you're rich doesn't mean you're going to want to continue to renew the rights to a flash-in-the-pan piece. You can, but it'd be throwing money away unless you think you'll be able to capitalize on it. You can scale copyright fees based on the owner's ability to pay if you like. But claiming that e.g. Tolkien justifies the existence of long copyrights doesn't seem reasonable to me. Tolkien wasn't incentivized to write Lord of the Rings by the possibility that decades in the future it'd be converted into a blockbuster movie series.

Exponential growth makes 'indefinite' incredibly expensive, it just makes it a soft limit instead of a hard limit. We can argue about numbers for a sensible system, but the current life of author + 70 years is an absolutely unjust hand-out to corporations.

Farecoal posted:drat, can't believe they're marketed as edutainment too... smdh this is a little ways back, but AssCreed has been really interesting with regards to this lately. Origins (and also possibly Odyssey) has two different modes: there's the main game, which of course shits all over history so you can stab more people, but then there's also a "discovery tour" mode that throws all that out the window and lets you just bumble around virtual Egypt and look at various points of interest, at which the game will pause and a narrator will tell you the actual history of what you're looking at apparently the discovery tour mode is well-done enough that some schools actually use it

The Red Cross (the symbol) is a protected symbol under the Geneva Conventions, and they don't like it being used in video games (they've been pretty lax in the past about it tho)
