It's true, Nat and Tea are doing great. Personally, I'd love to see them take on a mission without the unique weapons and armor from the Alien Rulers DLC. (Frost Bombs, Bolt Caster, Shadowkeeper, Hunter's Axe and the skins of the dead rulers)

They have the skills, enough items and high level soldiers to make it work, so I believe it would be a welcome change of pace from the usual routine.

I'm bearing this in mind, but there's one more ruler left and I'm not willing to go in without Frost Grenades until it's dead and buried.

Consider that just researching the plot only opened up new objectives, and new enemies didn't appear until you did plot stuff in the field, and that researching the plot now may not really delay you getting new upgrades, since if you research them right away, you'll still need lots of supplies to implement them.

Yeah rangers are fairly replaceable, they build kills and promotions real quick especially if you've got one already started like Spag. Emi would be a hard loss.

The morale loss from Pete's death would also be hard to recover from though. Severa too, I'm not sure Nat would ever get over it.

If Severa dies I will be absolutely inconsolable. Especially now that she has her voice back.

Emi is easily the biggest key man risk on the team for sure. We ideally need to find a promoted specialist somewhere to act as her understudy.

But honestly I think Pete might be more powerful than her just because of how strong the synergy on his kit is.

True reality is on this side of the screen

You should put the Berserker Queen armor on a Ranger instead of Emi, especially if you are using the flamethrower over the rocket launcher.

The armor points helps them survive, the flamethrower needs to be up close to have the best effectiveness and the Rage strike (which is a free action like the axe throw) helps soften up enemies for an up close kill. Or finish off a weakened enemy and move them closer without using any actions.

It's not really "crippling yourself" when the difficulty of vanilla XCOM 2 was fine and Alien Hunters is the worst non-comsmetic DLC. The reason I tuned in for this was to see how they would adapt their tactics to the new and weird enemies the game throws at you, but if the single tactic is going to be "freeze everything new & threatening, kick it while it's down, repeat until completing weapon upgrades that trivialize the encounters", that isn't going to be very interesting.

Willing to agree with that; when I play I refuse to use the frost grenades just because they're way too broken even by broken item standards, to the point where they really don't need any thought to utilize.
But everybody's got their own style and given how rocky the start was you can definitely see their reasons for using it.

Alien Rulers was just a really poorly thought out DLC, in pretty much every way. It's a real shame.

I think it changes a bit when involving this series (:xcom:) and announcing that it will be a blind run.

The frost grenade really throws me off as someone who hasn't played the newer games. I can see how deaths are more significant with a smaller roster, but it still comes across as a sort of cheat to me.

Honestly it's a little frustrating. We never wanted the actual gameplay part of the DLC to begin with, just the cosmetics, but the game is tremendously unclear about how you go about doing that.

Fwoderwick
Jul 14, 2004

On harder difficulties I think the frost grenade feels a lot more balanced because with enemies having increased health, the chance that you can't deal with everything on screen increases by a lot.

The thing is though, once the rulers are out the picture then if you don't use the frost grenade then you can just put more tactical onus on the mimic beacon (which is barely used in this LP) and achieve pretty much the same outcome.

That said you're at a point where omitting it probably won't slow you down and if it's use is becoming monotonous or rote for you guys playing the game then it might help keep things interesting. I guess calls to leave out the frost grenade is no different to my keenness to see the robots in that regard.

I'm not particularly interested in any attempts to inject artificial schadenfreude to the LP though.

That's fair.

Obviously the game can still gut punch us but as far as a cohesive LP narrative goes, we've gone from an absolutely disastrous start to slowly learning from our mistakes and evolving strategies over time based on what's available to us. I think with the addition of Severa we're on to our final major strategic variation. Shadow Ranger/Ranger/Specialist/Sniper/Grenadier/Fill in and it's giving us consistent flawless ratings.

The problem is that the effective victory lap this is giving us is running very long so I can completely understand people's growing frustration at the lack of blood.

Nordick
Sep 3, 2011

Yes.
It's not even about a "lack of blood" really. More like a lack of sweat. I don't think anyone would seriously complain about you getting excellent and flawless mission results, if they were achieved in less monotonous ways.

And just to be clear, I am not blaming you guys for anything. It's just a shame that you happened to run afoul of the bad DLC and its weird-rear end implementation.

Alas, Serial and Rapid Fire don't stack because if the first shot fails to kill anyone it therefore counts as ending the Serial. Each shot has to kill to get the next one on Serial.

Akratic Method

It's going to pay off eventually--I'm sure of it.

Any day now.

Sorry, Serial only works with regular shots. Your reading of the ability description was completely reasonable and that's XCOM's fault for not making its rules clear, but from a game balance perspective it would have been way too insanely good to allow combining it with special shot types so I get why it works that way. Rapid Fire is already so good they nerfed it with a 5-turn cooldown in the expansion.

And I'm happy to see you finally find a case where the frost bomb is not an instant win button! See, you still did ok and got away unscathed, albeit because Severa was carrying the other win button. (well, more of a "don't lose" button ) Sectopods and the other enemy type that occupies four tiles (pretty mild spoiler) thaw immediately at the cost of half their turn.

Edit: ^^^ wait, really? So if they'd used Rapid Fire but killed the officer on the first shot, it'd have counted for Serial? I did not know that.
