If you think back to SA 10 years ago it’s kind of surprising that we shaped up the way we did. There’s an alternate universe where we end up an alt right 4channy cesspool and Lowtax never gets powercucked

No that was mostly posters in D&D, LadyAmbien tried to run some damage control and decided she'd rather not deal with her husband's website of insane people and left

Was that GBS 2.0? When ironic racism peaked so they decided to scorch the earth and take a different approach?

Probably helps that SA doesnt skew 15-24 white males which are the key incel white nationalism growth sector.

Actually I seem to recall when Something Sensative (SS...really?) got its major influx of angry posters every other post youd read there was trans or homophobic slurs. I'm guessing that exodus kept everything stable and progressive.

I think it was and I think so too.

I know the mantra for defending the indefensible around here used to be "Welcome to Something AWFUL" but somewhere along the line, you're right, the demographic shifted or something and the place incrementally grew up, even if only if a little bit, and the "anything goes" crowd went to 4chan and redditt.

I think the shift away from being edgy for edgy's sake started with flushing Helldump, which had devolved to not only reaching for proper targets, but goons seeing how far they could stretch their edgelord burns in ways that could cram "human being" and "friend of the family" into every other post that were revolving around suggestions that the target of the OP "kill themselves". Plus there was a lot of weird internet detective and doxxing poo poo going on and near the end it and, ultimately, it committed the worst sin of all: just not being loving funny.

But shortly after (I think), GBS became...whatever the gently caress GBS is and I still think it was for the worst, offsetting any maturity this place attempted to gain through flushing Helldump by turning subsequently turning the site's biggest forum into low content unfunny shitposts and obtuse FYAD Light style in jokes that most people won't get.

Helldump at its peak was hilarious because it was based entirely around goons' willingly and voluntarily owning themselves through their own weird posts, other posters going "WTF is this poo poo?" and then the targeted goon rolling in to defend their bizarre behavior and strange confessions or otherwise rolling with the punches. But the doxxing and the out and out racism, homophobia, kink shaming and outright cruelty really poo poo up the board.

I think it was good that helldump went away, as much as I liked it for a while, but they should have left GBS alone and just moderated it a little more strictly.

The reverse happened a lot too. A poster would get slammed for being a dick, and they'd say, "I thought this was something awful!"

I thought the main reason Helldump got deleted was because people started targeting mods and admins. I mean I know there was more than one reason but I thought that was the #1 reason.

I kinda remember it getting deeply personal and crossing into people doing things in real life. It started with "hey poster X is actually a furry and here they are on this other site" and at some point became "print out all pictures of poster in fursuit, send to all immediate family with details."

At some point people in helldump would have reached the point where they started picking targets in the gay and trans threads and trying to out those people to their family/friends/employers.

Helldump is really a perfect example of why doxxing is bad. I don't care how much you dislike somebody or for what reason. Don't doxx them and actively try to burn their lives down. That isn't OK.

As far as I can tell SA is largely 28-34+ y.o. white males, who might be the last cohort to remember internet culture before it was all Nazis and social media?

Anyways I didn't post for years after reg'ing so I don't have any commentary on SA specific sagas, it's just weird to see / have seen the internet change so.
