Someone just said the firefights didn't have powerful enough hoses to reach the tallest parts of the building, which seems like a massive oversight if true.

Honestly this is an exceptional tragedy. Buildings and arts are the real, physical manifestation of a people's history and culture. They're the one and only place in which that poo poo is actually real, tangible, and important. Some evanescent gammon sense of are country is bollocks, but standing in an ancient cathedral, or among the works of old masters, or the like - those are the experiences that define and humble us. And yes, people dying is terrible as well, and outrageous and criminal a lot of the time; but there are always more people. There is - was - only one Notre Dame. I'd kill myself right now if it would save the cathedral (Or for that matter restore things destroyed or lost over the long millennia). Short of curing cancer or something my life could never come close to the value of a piece of humankind's heritage.

A single human life is more important than any building imo

Reports coming in that the workers were all Muslim and were replacing the building materials with ones blessed with The Holy Koran so it would actually become a mosque in the eyes of Allah. The managers knew about this but we're afraid to say anything because they were afraid of being called racist.

There's lots of old churches but they're generally in small places out of the way.

Alternatively, I dunno what did happen last time london burned down :v:

I'm sure we can stack some rocks in a circle, the technology is not beyond us. And the rocks can even be as old as the ones that are already there. Actually we could get some even older rocks if we wanted, and stack them up even higher!

York Minster did catch fire due to a lightning strike a while back, wiping out (iirc) the roof of the fancy CofE meeting hall/nave/whatever it is, but it was nothing compared to this. The last images I saw, most of the roof has collapsed inwards.

I mean if it's anything like the palace of westminster and buckingham palace the consensus is probably a: it's going to burn down anyway and b: we should lock the residents in when it does.
