Find Steed is a major class ability you could get, and a damage spell like Call Lightning would expand your good spell options beyond buffs.

Is mounted combat actually fun in this edition? I really want to make a goblin that rides around on a boar sticking people with spears while the boar charges into them. Can I actually make this work in a fun way? I would assume I would make a beatsmaster ranger for this character but is cavalier better since I know the ranger, especially the beast master, isn’t great.

It's best on Paladin, who get Find Steed at 5 and Greater Find Steed at 13. Fighter is OK if the DM hands out decent mounts, but it's still not as convenient as sharing spells and being able to just dismiss them or recast them if they die.

Either way you'll need to talk things through with your DM regarding how the mounted combat actually works: will you have reach to everything in contact with it or will you need to move around over it? When fighting as a unit the mount acts on your initiative, but does that mean you can choose whether it goes before or after you, and can change that turn to turn? Or does it mean that the mount can move, then you make attacks, then the mount is allowed to move again? etc

Nope! None of us have ever played Curse of Strahd before. He is a super new college aged DM and seems to take some poo poo from published campaigns and then add in OP monsters and go off the rails. I have no idea what is what.

Counterspell!

I took Destructive Wave as one of mine and I regret it, because (1), I am super fragile so anything in range is Big Trouble for me and (2) I roll like crap and (3) it targets CON and everything is strong against CON.

If you don't have a ranger or druid, and Xanathar's spells are allowed, Healing Spirit is hilariously broken for out of combat healing. It's only 2nd level and does 10d6 healing to each creature that can walk through a 5 foot square over the course of a minute. Sure, you'll look silly walking in a circle, but you'll be healed!

When I played a Lore Bard I made sure all of my secrets were spells that weren't on the spell lists for any other players in our party. I was the only arcane caster, so I took Counterspell and Fly (both are sor/war/wiz spells).

At 10th level I took Wall of Force since it's only available to wizards. It was a godsend on multiple occasions. I think I also took Evard's Black Tentacles (war/wiz) but I didn't wind up using it much.

They need a save to teleport out of the WoF.

Also lol if a 9th level Wizard doesn't have either War Caster or Resilient, plus Shield prepared.

They do not need a save to teleport into/out of a Wall of Force. Nothing in the text mentions anything other than physically trying to get through, just that it extends into the Ethereal Plane. So even just Misty Step will get you through.

Are there video games for 5e or 4e like there are for Pathfinder with Pathfinder: Kingmaker? I really want to try a game like that but the Pathfinder ruleset is really off-putting to me.

I dislike playing tabletop Pathfinder because it seems like a system where everyone is just trying to make the most ridiculously overpowered character they can, and the rules, feats and classes actively encourage it. And because if that, I have a bias towards games based on Pathfinder. Maybe the group I've played Pathfinder with has ruined it for me, but I just like the newer versions of D&D way more, and would love to try a video game based on them.

Pro is an amazing name!
Despite being very easy and almost tailor-made to being converted into a video game, Atari sat on the D&D licence for all of 4e's lifespan and refused to make a video game with it other than a generic MMO that barely resembled D&D. As far as I know, it's the same deal with 5e.

The closest you'll get to the D&D experience is 3e's Temple of Elemental Evil, which is authentic down to the point where the entire game falls to pieces the moment you try to do anything clever with it.

People apparently did not enjoy it cause it was not very faithful to the tabletop. Then the studio making it went under.

Lmao I did not know the end of that story. I mean I poo poo on 5e but real talk just having an implementation of the tabletop so you can level up and play out your characters you'll never get to play irl is why people play these games. I'm not surprised thats why people didn't go to it.

Atari got the licence for producing electronic media for D&D for the entire run of 4e. They made one game which was an action adventure game and a facebook game during that period and nothing else just to do the minimum to keep the licence. It hosed over any chance of getting a good videogame rpg for a system that is renowned for having really engaging and clever combat mechanics.

They also got sued by WotC at some point over this licensing deal? It was before my time playing D&D but I've read a bit about it.

Yeah that's a shame. A 4e faithful game could have been cool.

Sword Coast Legends the decently recent failed game also had the fatal flaw as marketing itself as a successor to stuff like Neverwinter Nights and Baldur's gate. I played the game, and while it has some cool aspects, it really did not measure up to anything like those games, and it was not faithful in the least to the game system it marketed itself as being based on.

So they tried to signal that they were doing the thing everyone loved but ultimately appealed to neither the people who like that old style of rpg nor the people coming for 5e.

It was this weird cross between Diablo and Baldur's Gate and it had some neat ideas but just felt like a buggy game.

The Neverwinter MMO is still alive somehow. They update it with new storyline content from 5e with like a year lag time. Undermountain comes out soon, they've done ravenloft, chult, rise of tiamat, OOTA, POTA, etc. It's free but prods you to buy things in the cash shop. Someone must be buying stuff.
