I do think it's neat that most of our cool homestuck thread posters are back, it's like a fun reunion where we all have to actually loving wait for an update in 2019, against all odds.

Personally I hope John goes back to the end of cascade, the last time in my personal opinion that the entire comic was good without a ", but..." attached to the word, and Hussie writes a better, much more concise act 6 having erased pretty much all the trash characters from existence maybe roxy can stay

Canon now being an in-universe story mechanic to describe activities far removed from the main story, particularly those happening on Earth C Because they're always happening, and they didn't stop from being a thing. It's just over time, the further removed they are from Acts 1-7, and the less they do to drive the plot to stop Lord English, the more delegitimized they become in the minds of higher forms like the reader In order to regain some of the legitimacy of what's happened after THE END, the story needs to REAFFIRM itself with MAJOR PLOT POINTS, else there's no real point for which any objective observer could actively give one or more fucks about

AH: Redefine the significance of canon while simultaneously making GBS threads on it; vaccuming it into the higher meta of Homestuck, like you always have

Spellman posted:Canon now being an in-universe story mechanic to describe activities far removed from the main story, particularly those happening on Earth C It's all of this, but also the additional meta layer that Paradox Space and/or Hussie are capricious storytellers, and their reward for winning was to exit canon, where they are free to have happy lives without plot twists or World Ending Consequences. Basically, they thought they paid off their hero bill, but the bank came back and said there was a $10 fee that's been gathering interest for years and they need to take care of it.

A fun way to do that is via the books (which Viz has digital copies of, now), because Hussie is very snarky in his commentary and points out stuff that he'd planned early and either a) didn't go anywhere or b) had deep significance several years later.

Instead I'm finally getting around to playing my kickstarter copy of Hiveswap. My first complaint is that the inventory management system is not terrible and obtuse. Edit: Grandpa Harley is the worst Jegus. Edit Edit: That was fun but very short. Now for the rest to never come out. MonsieurChoc fucked around with this message at 19:39 on Apr 18, 2019 |

Grandpa Harley is the very very worst. I think Hussie released a diagram that showed that he'd loved and left more people than just Joey's mom and John's grandmom.

MonsieurChoc posted:I'm thinking of re-reading Homestuck from the start. re read it from the end instead, if you read homestuck backwards it becomes a comic where many extremely boring characters eventually disappear, while the remaining characters develop and end up happier, more likable and in a better situation

I'm re-reading online because while all the notes are cool, a static medium like a book doesn't re-create the nostalgic experience. I'd forgotten how funny the beginning is. Vaulthalla had me laugh out loud for real. Also I'd completely forgotten about Rose's walkthrough. Arsenic Lupin posted:Grandpa Harley is the very very worst. drat. At least Joey got a cool babysitter who's only mildly a complete mess herself. I'm thinking of reading the terrible timeline everyone hated after out of morbid curiosity, but I'll probably have forgotten by the time I reach the ending again.

You know what's kind of weird? We know nothing about Bro's life before he adopted Dave. We know all about Grandpa Harley loving his way around the globe and Nana's full life story and where mom Lalonde grew up, but (unless I missed something) no backstory information has ever been released on Bro. It's the kind of thing I probably wouldn't care about if it existed, but the fact that it doesn't exist feels strange to me.

Honestly I suspect Beta Dirk simply did absolutely nothing except studying the blade and running bizarre internet pornography shops. He wasn't qualified to have friends.

Much is made of Bro's abusive parenting but I kind of suspect Grandpa was somehow a worse person. Not that ranking terribleness of fictional people matters.

Grandpa seems to have actively betrayed his duty to more people, yeah. Bro Strider was doing his best; it's just a really bad best that messed Dave up worse than Grandpa half-assing it.

MonsieurChoc posted:Much is made of Bro's abusive parenting but I kind of suspect Grandpa was somehow a worse person. Meanwhile Mom Lalonde seemingly loved the poo poo out of her daughter, she was just also an alcoholic. I have reached the Midnight Crew intermission, which remains amazing after all these years. Now these are the type of shenanigans I wanted out of an Homestuck videogame. Hiveswap didn't have any needlessly complicated time puzzle or crappy inventory management. Edit: Also yikes at the Bill Cosby refs. These were more innocent times. MonsieurChoc fucked around with this message at 01:52 on Apr 19, 2019 |

Bro was raised by a puppet possessed by the most evil amalgamation of spirits to ever exist. I feel like going any further into that backstory would just be trauma porn.

Alright, I finished Act 4 and now to sleep. Man, Act 1 to 5 remain super good. Great even. I started reading somwhere during early Act 6, I don't remember exactly when except that I barely slept the evening Meenahquest dropped and was super tired at work the following day. I know it's a drop in quality untilt he disappointing enbding, but I still love this dumb story and these dumb characters and even the worst Homestuck gets is better than a lot of the other poo poo I read. I mean, as a teen I used to read and love the old Star Wars EU. I can still rant about it for hours. That's way worse than Hamsteak.
