Update about those Retro-Bit Sega controllers: I got a reply from them on Twitter and the Bluetooth models should be announced "in the upcoming months," and they are indeed meant to work with the Switch.

Usually I loathe mixed pixel ratio stuff and if someone told me about how this depends on emulating snes games with a non-stock internal resolution without showing me any examples of how it looks I would probably get all huffy and declare myself completely uninterested, but these screenshots really speak for themselves, holy moly

Looks really similar to the way N64 games look a poo poo ton better in an emulator due to the high level graphics emulation. I like it a lot. Always hated the shimmering in Super Mario Kart.

Was it moral for Japanese developers to intentionally increase the difficulty of export versions of games? And specifically to do so to curtail the rental market?

I don't understand that, I thought I heard we didn't get Super Mario 2 due to its difficulty.

Square ported easy versions of their games over/made new games to be even easier for Americans while Ninja Gaiden 3 or Contra Hard Corps are massively more difficult than their Japanese counterparts because gently caress you rental market!

I'm sure that was part of the equation but the biggest factor is that NoA didn't want to set a reputation as a producer of rehashed cash-ins. It would've triggered a lot of the same feelings that lead to the staleness of the pre-cash market. Far more Japanese games were made intentionally harder in the U.S. because of the rental market. Konami in particular was bad about it and there's few 16-bit Konami games that weren't made harder. Particularly infamous are Castlevania 3, Contra Hard Corps, Rocket Knight Adventures, but even Tecmo joined in by giving us the harder Ninja Gaiden 3.

Our laws do not represent morality so much as morality is created to justify existing law. Developers took cheats out of video games because it doesn’t mesh with in-app purchases. Cheating in online games is policed because it ruins other player’s experience, not because cheating at video games is fundamentally wrong. But people can’t handle nuance, and suddenly you’re committing a hate crime by making Mario glitch through walls.

I don't think it has anything to do with morality but rather self worth. People put a lot of their identity into their hobbies so when they see someone cheat, even if it's in private, it's very often seen as a personal insult. "I did this thing with no assistance, are you saying you're better than me?" It's toxic and harmful but part of maturing is realizing that everyone's experience isn't more or less valuable and doesn't need to be compared. I remember how lovely I was going through that phase of looking down on TAS as "cheatrunning" but tool assisted and unassisted inform each other and both contribute to the growing culture of appreciating and understanding video games.
