I got my DirecTV AM21 Tuner, so now I have one TV in my home that has full cable and some local channels that can record to a DVR. Now just to figure out the other two TVs, and install the outdoor antenna because my indoor one is garbage and doesn't get NBC.

I did the trials for PSVue, DirecTV Now, and Sling... decided to move forward with the Sling Blue for $15/mo for 3 months deal they have going on. The DVR functionality is ideal for me. Can start a show live on one device, resume the show on a different device. Skipping commercials shows a thumbnail instead of doing it blindly. 30 second ahead and 10 second back means you can skip commercials pretty effortlessly and end up exactly where you intent to, and the buffering to resume playback was the fastest compared to the other two. It also performs equally well on all my devices. PSV and DTVN just had too many problems for my liking. I never got around to the YouTubeTV trial, but I know I'll never go for it at $50.

I recently cut the cord. I've been using a $10 antenna, but since I'm half way between Providence and Boston, I should be able get a ridiculous amount of stations with an rooftop antenna. (I like PBS!) I'm looking to spend anywhere from $50 to $100. Should I get an outdoor antenna that rotates, or an omni-directional one? Which is "better"?

I’m looking for some advice. I just want to get my pre-existing antenna upgraded and have it grounded. I already purchased everything but every antenna installer in my area refuses to install anything unless they supply everything including the antenna. I know it’s just because they want to charge a little bit extra but goddamnit I just want to have this drat thing upgraded. Should I contact an electrician or something?

However, after reviewing the channels available to me, I see that most of the Providence RI channels I could pick up are just dupes of CBS/ABC/NBC, not more PBS stations... So I might as well get a directional and point it at the Boston stations.  Even though I'm more or less directly between Providence and Boston, the Boston stations are broadcast from the Blue Hills, South West of the city.

With how strong those signals are coming in from the north west, you may be able to get away with pointing your antenna at the weaker signals and still get both. It's at least worth experimenting with, and an amplifier could make a difference as well.

No one responded so do you guys just not bother grounding your antenna? I didn't and last year lightning from my neighbor's yard zapped 2 TVs because it wasn't grounded.

In fact, I'm going to bet your homeowner's insurance will just laugh and laugh if you have to make a claim because lightning struck your antenna. If it's just in the attic, then you're fine.

I've been watching a ton of the Gordan Ramsey channel on Pluto lately but holy poo poo they play the exact same Mazda commercial every single commercial break. The exact same slow version of a Cranberries song repeated 5 -7 times an hour, over and over and over. For fucks sake let me pay you money and get rid of ads!

I didn't think they'd even cover the TVs and TCL replacements were cheaper than my deductible, who gives a gently caress about Comcast boxes, they didn't and I plan on trying to swap out the outlet first before making a claim.

I guess the question is, did the lightning enter you home through *your* antenna line? Because I think that's the salient question here. If there was no reasonable way for you to mitigate the lightning damage yourself, I think you'll be OK. If it came over your power lines in the house, I think there's gently caress all you can do except have one of those lightning rated power strips to prevent that. I don't know of any insurance that requires that.

Yeah Comcast didn't care when I swapped the boxes out for my parents. Lighting strike too. Took out two desktop pcs, all the cable boxes and fried some outlets. Some surge protectors worked and others didn't.

Mine is only $500, but I sure as gently caress wouldn't file a claim for a TV. Homeowners claims are for like 10s of thousands of damage. Anything less and you are going to be spending a hell of a lot more when your rate goes up after policy renewal.

I'm on ethernet which might help, but the "smart" stuff they added is actually just cast to the existing Chromecast functionality which is how they've been able to add the dozen or so inputs so easily. None of the UI or the apps themselves are hosted on the television, they're just called up as web apps and cast to the TV behind the scenes.
