Posthumous congratulations to Davepeta^2sprite, indubitably the best Dave.

I actually kind of wonder-- the implication is Calliope-Jade kills Caliborne for real offscreen immediately before jumping from Candy to Meat, but since all of that is offscreen we don't actually see what's happened to Davepeta^2sprite beyond "presumably they've arrived in Candy, in some form"

I'll admit to being curious if the Candy plotline is continued at all or just left as-is with "we just dumped all these characters into Candy in some form, stuff will happen but you'll never know what and it doesn't matter because it's not canon"

I thought the implication was that Davepeta kamikaze'd Lord English into the black hole.

DIRK: Sorry, that’s just how it is.

DIRK: You either gotta roll with the woke poo poo, or decide to commit laborious, symbolic, melodramatic suicide in the process of utterly giving up.
(meat 29 spoiler)

i can't believe that hussie is subjecting us to the long drawn out death of dirk, and in fact this entire epilogue, as a form of internet seppuku to atone for his problematic crimes

Valentin
Sep 16, 2012

anyways the epilogue is, unfortunately, very good, and the only issues i have (perma-fascist jane, dirk's slide into genuinely loathsome supervillainy) will probably be dealt with by the epilogue epilogue that seems likely to happen

Interesting to note, on the meat side, that Dirk doesn't start becoming obviously loathsome and toxic in his commentary until he's consciously revealed himself as the narrator. The battle rap segment in the early parts of the meat path establishes, I think, that Dirk understands the difference between normal heel heat and go-away heat. There's other elements that ring weirdly, too, like Dirk's rapid 180 from ignoring Roxy's gender id to suddenly emphatically supporting it. These are all explainable by Dirk just being a truly toxic rear end in a top hat, but given that the text has evidence to indicate that alt-Calliope is less heroic than she says, it's worth noting that Dirk is also possibly trying to golden path/zero requiem us or something.

e: come to think of it (meat and candy side stuff), a recurrent idea on the candy route is that John's choice to stay instead of go isn't responsible for everything bad that has happened, and that to believe that is to deny the agency, depth, and subjectivity of the people around him. That's interesting to square against the meat side idea that Dirk can know people well enough to manipulate them perfectly, and even reach out to deny them narrative agency entirely. There's a tension in how each route views the authority conferred by narrative control.

Anyways, it was a cool Detective Pony fanfic.

it was a “kamikaze” from the pov of someone who thought going into the black hole was a death sentence instead of a portal to candyland, but they literally just grabbed LE by the scruff of their neck and jumped in so unless LE murked them offscreen, they’re probably in there somewhere

i read through the whole thing and it was exhausting, but mostly because it took so long. this update was two full length novels. what the gently caress

read meat first and then candy, i think they really work in either order but i would probably recommend meat and then candy, just because some events in candy seem to happen after things in meat. there's a little of that going the other way around, but, the majority of "one affects the other" stuff is meat -> candy. it feels like the intended order

a ton of real weird poo poo happened in both of these, though. i dont even know what to talk about.

I really think the tiny part of "our" Dirk left inside the Prince of Hope is what ultimately will lead to his own defeat. It's the part that Dave calle dout as always making others hate him. It's the part that says "Of course I have to be stopped" and "The next time Dave decapitates me it's gonna be final". It's the part that most likely set up Fake Obama to create Davebot.

Anyway who else is gonna go Ultimate Self?

My read of this is that CepheidVariable is (probably) done with this; she's got a novel coming out soon. I don't get any inference that Homestuck is done one way or another.

It's Hussie. Who the hell knows. It's an extremely unsatisfying ending because of the loose ends, but he'd certainly do that to us.

Absolutely it is, I just enjoy speculating. Re the novel, in modern SF publishing, she's almost certainly writing something right now (and has been since copyedits were finished if not earlier) because there's a lot of pressure to be productive to keep your name in front of the public.

Saying “it’s unsatisfying on purpose” seems unnecessary at this point, but I definitely think one reason the epilogue goes as far as it does is to make it easy for people to say “hell no, not my canon.”

I haven't read it, but... yeah, I don't think I will. It's not an epilogue, it's Homestuck Act 8: Everything is Terrible Edition, and I really don't feel a need for that. The fact that people are discussing a possible epilogue epilogue just says to me that sure, stuff happens, but this doesn't leave us in a different place with regards to closure.

Maybe it's all really good from a meta perspective, but that was never what I liked Homestuck for, and I don't feel like wading through weird misery porn to get the little flecks of dialogue gold that are buried within.

OPENING MY TAI CHI IS ABOUT AS APPEALING AS THE GOATMAN OPENING HIS ANUS
In retrospect, this whole thing reminds me of that part in the final Dark Tower novel where Stephen King has an interlude before the epilogue to basically say: "Hey, I gave you a happy ending. Let it go. Be happy with that. You don't need anything else." and then immediately starts to berate the reader for being the type of person who wants to read on and see the true coda.

I think it fixed the ending while also setting up for more later- production is no longer driven for Hussie reasons, but for Viz Media LLC reasons. A lot of this story is about relevancy, about characters remaining alive in the minds of readers and fans- and that relevancy is essential not only to ideas of canon, but to maintain public interest in an original IP purchased by a company that mostly just translates other peoples' work

this was a good read with a poo poo ton of symbolic references to the act of engaging with a text so it's very much my jam- goddamn I've been in this swamp since I started reading Problem Sleuth at 24, now I'm in my late 30s, and the influx of teen fans from 2012 onward or so has made MSPA's tone seem like something more and more not For Me, like I'm an old man hanging out at Chuck E Cheese because they have some really good arcade cabinets

seeing the kids age past me in Candy was interesting- grappling with the alienation that comes with your friends coupling up and starting families has been a thing my friend group has been going through for a lil while now, and being able to relate to adults directly, instead of relating to kids in a 'ahhh I remember that' way, is something I didn't know I wanted out of Homestuck of all things, but here it is and it was good.

also I really liked the more traditional book format (though if I had to guess, going that way had more to do with making it printable and quicker to produce- but I still liked the result!)
