Quick recap in English here:

quote:

"BLOCKING THE REPUBLIC OF POLLUTERS" - REBELLION WEEK DAY 5

After the actions of Extinction Rebellion in several cities around the world, the ecology driven by civil disobedience and non-violent blocking actions is on the rise. Today there has been a major blocking action (potentially the largest civil disobedience action in France) co-organized by Greenpeace, Il est encore Temps, Les Amis de la terre, Extinction Rebellion and ANV-COP21 aimed at "the republic of polluters", all in the heart of La Défense, a symbol of capitalism if there is one.

This morning, about 2000 people gathered to block access to the headquarters or branches of several multinationals, banks and ministries. Total, EDF, Société Générale and the Ministry of Ecological Transition were targeted.

The aim of the action, which is in line with Rebellion Week, is to highlight the links between large polluting companies and the highest levels of the executive and to show the complacency of the government towards those companies that criticise the green-washing of government policy, which is far from any ecological considerations.

The activists gathered at 9 a.m. went around the neighbourhood to put up posters showing Macron's face decorated with the mention "Macron president of polluters", a sentence that will also be painted all over La Défense. They have also placed Macron's portraits in town halls since February 21 at the feet or inside the towers, a symbol, according to the organizing associations, of real places of power where environmental policy is decided.

At the same time, the towers of Total, the Société Générale and EDF are blocked by demonstrators who mostly settle in front of them to prevent any entry or sometimes inside when they have been able to access. Some even occupy car parkings like Total, preventing cars from accessing the site. The antenna of the Ministry of Ecological Transition also sees its square invaded by demonstrators who criticize the government's inaction in the face of the climate emergency.

The police forces present in large numbers face non-violent activists who have chosen civil disobedience. But the protection of property and individuals forces police officers to use gas to try to disperse demonstrators in front of the general public and to free the EDF site around 3pm by dragging activists to the ground.

Prevented from entering the towers some employees observe the situation, discuss with the demonstrators, support the action for some, decry it for others considering the targets poorly chosen. The police are setting up a single-track exit for Total Tower employees from noon, the last employees leaving around 5pm under the crowd's slogans "Don't go home, join us! ».

This large-scale action brings together a good number of participants and many of them are those for whom civil disobedience actions are a novelty. Employees of the major target groups at times brought water and food to the activists who were blocking their desks, a sign of support for the movement. The police, on the other hand, seem to be rather caught off guard and do not show the violent outbursts that are common in many demonstrations. This blocking action, which has taken place during the day in most cases, seems to be a great success and perhaps a prelude to the widespread use of civil disobedience and blocking as a mode of protest in the struggle for ecology.
The organizations are already announcing that they will not stop there and are calling for joining the global youth climate strike on May 24.

Meanwhile, they're banning journalists from covering the protests now:

https://twitter.com/CharlesBaudry/status/1120390808010731520?s=19

The ostensible justification is that the guy gave the finger to some cops after getting hit in the knee by a grenade. The ban is in effect until his trial, in the middle of October. He's already said he's going to go anyway.

And it is reason for the rest of the world to have a rethink. History erupts in Paris first, and then it spreads. An old order dies and is reborn as a new one. Macron is hoping that even if his popularity is dipping below 20 percent, he can win again if the alternative is Marine Le Pen and her far-right Rassemblement national. But in fact, the alternative may be socialist Jean-Luc Mélenchon. In Macron’s failures, I see one potential future coming into view: Mélenchon in France, Jeremy Corbyn in the United Kingdom, and Bernie Sanders in the U.S.

Depends on why you hate a school producing an elite group of public servants. Are you a thatcher fan who hate the "public service" and want every piece of it destroyed or a person who hate the idea of the public service being in the hand of a small elite? If he was replacing it with something better i would say bon but he is just bulldozing though a French state institution.

Shouldn’t American conservatives be excited about privatization coming to the French economy? Given the French record on privatization, probably not. When French politicians talk about privatizing state assets, the result is almost never the creation of a competitive market that drives up quality and drives down prices for service. Instead, the result is giving friends from school — part of the clubbable Parisian elite — a license to extract wealth out of a state asset, with the implicit promise of taxpayer-funded bailouts when the enterprise grinds to a halt.

Luckily american conservatives would never stand for such a thing.
