I tried doing the campaign on expert but I hosed around so long like I always do I got to a point I couldn't really compete militarily because they all were ignoring each other and loving with me.

Also trade routes between the new world and the old world may be my least favorite thing ever. It's like 10 minutes back and forth.

I've been having some trouble with trade routes - often a ship will be unable to unload everything it's carrying to a given port(if the receiving island's storage is full), and from then on whatever cargo slot is in use is effectively just locked. Even on the next voyage, if the receiving island's storage of that resource isn't full, it won't unload it. Eventually the trade route grinds to a halt and nothing gets transported unless I manually empty the inventory while in port. Yall had this problem at all?

Ask me about my tattoos.
Well.. you can just consider that slot always-used if you put something in it.

Alternatively, there's an option in the trade route option to tell your ship to wait at the dock to unload everything before moving on.

TIL. Thanks to you, and thanks to the devs for zero tutorial on various crucial systems.

there's also an option in there to huck remaining inventory overboard if there's anything left in the slot after dropoff

Yeah, I had a really frustrating experience last game where due to AI or proximity to the pirate base or something, every time I built a frigate a pirate convoy of four frigates would sail in to my harbor, blow the poo poo out of the ship, and sail away. Even when I took one or two out with harbor guns, by the time I buy Kt a New frigate, the pirates would come back with just as many as before.

I started a new game and doubled my normal cannon production, and now I’m doing that to Anne.

Campaign is honestly doing my head in now. Normally i just play peaceful sandbox in Anno but thought i'd try the campaign but the pirates are driving me up the wall. Is there any benefits to completing the campaign other than achievements?

Same thing happened to me. I decided to start over with the pirates turned off, but there's no particular reason to stick to it if you're not otherwise enjoying it. The Queen portrait for finishing it on Advanced is pretty cool, I guess, but that's about it.

Wait.. can you do the campaign without the pirates?

FractalSandwich

You sure can. If you go into the custom difficulty settings, it does lock off a few of the options, but most of them are there, including all the ones having to do with competitors and pirates.

When I did it, it bugged out a little bit and Jean still showed up, but his ships just sat around his base and left me alone.

I have a map without a single coutchoc/rubber fertility in it. Not one in the New world. I couldn't believe it, I had to stop for the night, and then check today.

No loving Rubber.

Between that and the whole "Orbreros lady gives me a quest to build a Museum when I'm at like 200 Orberos" mess, I think I'm just gonna restart. For reference, you need 1,500 Orbreros to unlock a Museum in the New World.

If it would trash anything it would crash or your PC would shut down. It just means some load on GPU or CPU is so high that your automatic fan control needs to counter that, which is good.

Yeah I’m replaying the campaign on expert but I turned the tax income back up because low makes everything a chore. Being able to swap the individual settings around like that is cool.

EDIT: Thinking about it I think low income stuff is tedious because you buy items with gold too. I can sell Frigates all game but I’m still skating with bankruptcy because the good rare stuff is 30 minutes of Frigate production, that kind of thing.

i just have a few ship of the lines patrolling lanes between islands between the pirate base and mine and it seems to take care of it. They never succesfully pirate any of my goods they just lose ships but all theyll do is offer a ceasefire so like lol im not letting them build up a fleet and dont feel like assaulting their 500 gun emplacements at the moment.

You can kill the entire pirate base with 3 SOLs and some cheese.

The only real threat is the big gun due to his high aoe damage - but if you come in from the narrow passage with the steep mountain, the big gun can't shoot - but will lock on to the ship. Then you bring the rest in through the main entry and blow the gun up as it's still pointed away from the real fleet.

Yeah, the pirates are no longer any real threat to me after I got a few SoLs patrolling around. I just ignore them at his point, they just complain I sunk their ship and keep demanding money for a ceasefire.

Taking out the pirates in the new world was as easy as parking about 8 SOL's inside their little inlet and declaring war on them. 8 broadsides from them killed the big cannon almost instantly, then I let them target what they wanted. The island was conquered in about 30 seconds lol

I'm gonna need a recipe for this cheese, because I'm losing at least one ship every time I assault islands way less well fortified than the pirate base. Haven't even tried to crack that bad boy yet.

Game's good, by the way. Game real fuckin' good. My only wish is for some scenarios, like the ones from 2070--the special gimmick missions.

Shore defense will target boats through terrain like mountains but can't shoot, so you park a ship behind a ridge/mountain as close as possible and all of them will target it. They don't change targets even though they can't see the current target, so the rest of your boats get free shooting time. Your original boat has a very annoying habit of trying enter Line of Sight to shoot back since its a weird automated engagement, but just keep clicking the place they are at and they'll stay put while your others shoot. Theres also sometimes a small gap in the LoS where you boat will shoot but not be shot at, which is even more broken.

It works on any island with terrain cover close enough to the shore defenses btw.

This is some random google screenshot for a visual but park a boat on the right side of the island right behind the ridge there and all the shore defenses will target it and ignore everything else.

Some of the islands make this essentially impossible but the pirate coves at least are very easy to exploit this way.

One minor thing you can do is set the trade for building materials to buy to max; all of the neutral trade ships seem to drop off building materials, and I think it expands with each citizen tier. Steel is definitely on the list. Once I have steady income I'll generally set all of the starting materials to 75 when I make a new island and by the time I get around to using them they're usually maxed out. Same with the new world albeit slower.

With each tier adding new things you didn't and really couldn't plan around, you do run into problems where you just can't puzzle poo poo together anymore. I got to engineers and it'd be easier to start a new game with them in mind than rework everything I had set up to that point, especially since I was using the smaller islands that are really easy to max out given they need populations before engineers too. Like there's nowhere I could possibly put electricity on my forge island because I didn't think about it and I'm supporting 1800 workers entirely by trade as it is there. Don't get me wrong, it's definitely just something to adjust to with experience/practice, but being able to plan out in depth w/ blueprint mode beforehand would be pretty cool, yeah.

I think getting commuter docks at artisan level and not engineering would be helpful in the end, artisans are where you start to really spread out and you need to make all these little communities to support that, only to turn around next tier and be able to eek out way more land efficiency with a few commuter docks. It's kind of counter intuitive the way it is right now, like you should speed through artisans to get to the real game in a way.

Here's the forge island:

I put a lot of effort into setting a few support islands like this up, balancing all the pop needs and trade routes instead of just saturating my starting island, and now with commuter docks it makes way more sense to tear down all that housing and all the trade required and just shipping people instead. I don't have a problem with that swap, I just feel like it comes too late at engineers since doing anything big beforehand is almost a waste. Maybe that's intended, you basically just sit on one island, claiming some others until you get engineering and then explode outwards. Building up a bunch of small communities really just doesn't make sense when you'll get commuter docks eventually though.

Are you playing the campaign? How did you get the option to settle on new islands? I'm farther than that and haven't unlocked it yet.

I'm starting to hit a point where my growth is really stagnant but I don't have the required fertilization to make anything to raise happiness, and I'm also starting to just run out of space in general (unless I build stuff near where there are future resources like oil)
