When I think of Fast and Furious I think of the Shuto Kousoku series and all the cool cameos from the pop singers-turned underground hard rock symbols in the J-Rock scene in the 80's such as Akira Asakura a.k.a. Saori Saitoh and Akira Sudou, good times as I glaze over my vinyl collection since they never released CDs for some of their hard rock phases, a fact I like to lament as I read Fled Dúin na nGéd. Ahh, culture. Now if you'll excuse me, after further refining my knowledge of the fine intricacies of Buile Shuibhne (which is mythology, for you less informed) by watching American Gods S2, I'm off to learn Greek Mythology by watching Saint Seiya.

mycomancy posted:

I just don't get the complaining about this show in this thread. How many of you, before this episode, knew any version of the Buile Shuibhne? There is so much mythology and social commentary on this show but apparently there's not enough explosions or some poo poo?

I just don't understand y'all sometimes.

No one's asking for fast and furious action scenes and this straw man of "we want the plot to go somewhere" equals "people want dumb action scenes" makes zero sense. Good lord if you think learning about Mad Sweeney in this show is some educative milestone and automatically makes the episodes inherently good then I recommend checking a documentary as they'll probably blow your mind.

Would you be my new best friends?

I enjoyed that episode and I dug that the curse on Sweeney meant even he couldn't keep his own history straight since it had been co-opted and filtered through Christianity so they get all the worship for themselves. His own belief in their power (which he was trying to resist coming into Ireland) is what gave them power, and it is ironic that his wife's pleading that he join forces with the Church rather than stand against him basically parallels what Mr. World is trying to do now in the modern day.

I actually really dug him sending Odin's spear to the Hoard as one last gently caress you after Wednesday continually poo poo on him/treated him like he was nothing. He died as in the prophecy (I wonder if a God who believes he is dead is enough to ensure he stays dead regardless of the belief of others?) but he got to go out on his own terms knowing he finally got one over on Wednesday.

2) So far the only way that gods can die, that we know of, is by suicide or by starvation. Seeing how I double he's starving (St. Patrick's Day in Chicago or Boston?) and Shadow clearly killed him, I'm guessing the Mad King will be back.

Except the spear is always fatal, according to Wednesday. Maybe that's just for mortals, though.

I mean are you really saying that the Mad Sweeney flashbacks, specifically, were bad and not really cool?

The purpose of a flashback is to flesh out a character's motivations for their actions in the present. We already knew he had fallen for Laura and that, along with being treated like poo poo by Wednesday, had him ready to rebel. This flashback, while about a cool character doing cool things, didn't move the plot, or connect to the overall theme much. If he wasn't so ready to move against Wednesday beforehand or if it connected more clearly to the background setting about how human belief shapes Gods, it would have been more effective. Maybe having more background about what Odin's role in his backstory was.

But it was focused on Sweeney's motivations, which we already know well, so it was narrative dead weight. You could lift it out and it wouldn't affect plot, character or theme or anything. A side story about a random other god would have been preferable.

The spear is gone from the narrative. Obviously, if the writers want it to come back, they can do that. Right now though, the rising climax has been deflated.

I do wonder what the deal was with Thoth changing the story to be Sweeney killing his grandfather and trying to hide that he actually killed Odin. I guess in the end, this helped Sweeney realize that he had already defeated Odin once before and all it did was ruin his life. It's better to just gently caress Odin over.

A version with a bunch of earlier stuff from the Second Battle of Mag Tuired grafted on to be fair.
Did like Sweeney being dickish enough to go on about how as a god he fought off all these invading others without bothering to mention that the Fomoire were in Ireland before the Tuath Dé Danann arrived from elsewhere.
The more we see of the other gods in their glory the more I feel Czernobog was robbed, iirc even in the "behind the scenes" scenes all he gets is the battered remnants of an early 20th Century suit.

Anyone else get the feeling that the show is leading up to a Shadow Moon vs. Wednesday clash? I've had this suspicion for a while, and this episode almost spells it out:

quote:

Sweeney (to Shadow Moon): You think you earned it. You have the All-Father's favor today and it feels good. Doesn't it? Like the sun is shining on your fuckin' face. Like you did something to deserve it. Tomorrow you'll be me, Shadow.

And later in the episode Sweeney literally tries to run Wednesday down with Gugnir. I dunno, it seems like pretty explicit foreshadowing.

Then there's also the whole, every single god Shadow meets the first thing they tell him is to not trust wednesday or that wednesday is gonna get him killed.

Actually let me explain what I mean by significant:

1. Everyone goes hunting after tentacle rape gods support who has never had a role in the story before but then he gets killed, doesn't lead anywhere.

2. Wednesday goes looking for the money god who has never had a role in the story before but he wants none of this poo poo, doesn't lead anywhere.

3. New media usurps the best boy and he gets mind-trapped/killed, still hasn't lead anywhere and had no clear consequences.

4. We spend several episodes finding a spear and even get a whole back-episode explaining why it's broken (aaaaagh just why), literally gets magicked out of existence before it does anything.

5. Sweeney has an entire episode devoted to explaining his backstory in details, albeit not really telling us anything we didn't already know, and then he dies literally not 5 minutes later.

Nothing ever sticks, nothing ever leads anywhere and nothing ever happens. We still have zero pay-off for even the stuff that was set up in the first season.

EDIT: Also character building in the episode you're killing off the character just to make the audience care is such loving lazy storytelling. We should have been getting these backstories a full season ago, not literally the episode the character dies. The show has had all the time in the world to set up these characters, why is it happening in the style of a last-minute info-dump that grinds everything to a halt.

I've given up on this show going anywhere or reaching any conclusion and now I enjoy it more based entirely on the style of various old gods interacting in badass ways in modern America. I would have preferred that they had planned everything out ahead of time to last 3 seasons and then be over, so we might actually get a great conclusion, but if that's not going to happen I make as well enjoy this incredibly expensive production of awesome things happening until it suddenly comes to an end and stop complaining that they're not doing something that they obviously have no interest in doing.

Things that happened in episodes 5, 6 and 7:
-Technical boy being the telephone in the 40s/50s was fun, I read in an interview with someone that the gods can be reborn, and not even really be aware that it happened
-Was Thor supposed to be Kurt Kobain? i got super baked for this episode but thats what I kinda got from it
-Sweeney died, but ???? maybe not ???

Interesting character moments, but absolutely zero plot progression

Oh no!😱

Do I wish more progress through the plot (of the book) had been made this season? Yes. Have I been enjoying the show anyway? Also yes.

I kinda feel like its mainly to do with behind the scenes fuckery meaning that the show has effectively been without a showrunner for most of the second season. One person in charge has a vision of how the show should go, what pace it should make it through the plot of the book. No-one really truly in charge and the instinct is going to be just to keep the wheels spinning, dragging feet on the overall plot so as to not rock the boat by moving through the next major plot point (which, if I'm totally honest I cant recall of the top of my head. I've not read the book in years and I remember the beginning through to the house on the rock fairly clearly, and I remember the end, but I'm super fuzzy on the whole middle of the story).

I feel like someone has to take the reigns and lay out a bare bones timeline for the writers room ("by the end of season X we should be at point Y in the overall narrative") and not fall into the trap of worrying about "But what happens if we finish the story of the book while we are still popular enough to get renewed and make more episodes?" because pretty much every adaptation I've ever seen where that was their concerned got cancelled long before finishing their narrative because people got bored of waiting for the plot to move forward.

But, the cast are still good, the writing of each individual episode is fine, I like the characters and the world. So I'm still enjoying the show and hope it continues. I just hope that it continues with a faster pace and clear sense of direction.

I'm kind of expecting them to drop most of the Minnesota stuff, but if I'm being hopelessly optimistic, it might work out okay. That whole chunk of the story might as well be another book, but it has a specific plot the kobold and a conclusion that supports the main theme. What it doesn't have in Mr. World menacing someone, that person saying something cryptic, and Shadow getting confused and frustrated by the gods.
