My desktop just took a poo poo yay! Guy at local computer place wants to charge me 1k for a new little cube computer and data transfer does that sound good lol. For reference the desktop is like 10 years old with windows 7 so not really worth saving he said the drive is failing. Or they will transfer data to my external drive for 150 and I can figure it out from there.....might just do that

1k seems steep for a desktop + data transfer. Take his deal for $150 to rescue your data and then get some off-lease tower via the internet for <$500USD. Only incompatibility with your current peripherals might be your video port which might need a cheap adapter.

You shared it with a dick.

Saw the new Avengers last night, I thought it was great. The story definitely went in a direction I didn't expect and the Hulk steals the show again. Massive effort, worth seeing in the theater, but yeah sensory overload.

My very teenage daughter texted me mid-day and begged me to see it, she wanted to make sure none of her friends could spoil anything. I got us tickets for the 10:00 show after confirming that she would be ok staying up that late. The only seats available were the wheelchair companion seats but drat if none of them were sold, so I got them. They give you a warning that if an actual wheelchair user brings a companion they'll force you to move and I can live with that, it's only fair. But they are the best seats in the house for a party of two, and nobody is sitting next to you.

Then she had the balls to say she was too tired to go. I made her go anyway and she was grumpy and pissy the whole way there. We'll see if she thanks me for it today.

Yeah no gaming. It’s actually a pretty cool little pc and the price isn’t too far off from new towers with a 1tb ssd, but if I can get one for 500 that would be tits where can I get one of those?

Am I dumb for wanting an ssd? I’m assuming they are way more dependable than disk drives.

Because I can get a Lenovo tower with 1tb disk drive, 8th gen intel i3, and 8gb memory for 400 new from Best Buy

SSDs are basically mandatory now, but 1TB SSDs are expensive, most people will have a 256 or 512 SSD for the operating system and then have a large spinning disk for movies and crap.

1TB is down to $100-$150 now, worth it. I would still get a boot drive and storage drive, and I always just load older spinning drives into my pc and back poo poo up to them. I also have an external I back poo poo up to and keep in my desk at work, in case of like a fire or something. I should do that with paper too.

If you're just browsing the internet, that's fine. Is there a slightly upgraded model with a SSD?

If you're not afraid to open up the computer, you can easily add a SSD. A quality 512 gb ssd I think is $90 now and 1 TB is ~$150.

That's not a bad deal if you don't want to open up the tower at all. Adding a ssd is trivial though, and if all the other specs are the same you'd do better to pick up the 400 dollar one and slap in a crucial mx500 of whatever size you want. The 1tb is 130 on Amazon right now.

But if I put an ssd in wouldn’t I have to completely re install the OS to it as well? I wouldn’t need a huge ssd either just enough to run the OS and put everything else on the disk drive

Yes you'd have to reinstall the OS but it's not very difficult. Honestly, reinstalling the OS is usually one of the first things I do after I buy a computer. Best way to get rid of all the bloatware. You want your OS and any program you run often on your SSD. Mechanical drives are best for storing pictures or videos.

So mom and stepdad are in town.

Holy gently caress I forgot how passive aggressive my mom could be. This time it was directed at GF. :haw:

This particular instance was because I bought some clothes at Goodwill, and GF dropped the "I've never known anyone poor enough to shop at Goodwill" line on me last week. Mom worked into a conversation about how great it is to shop at Goodwill, and how cheap their clothes are (mom and stepdad both buy all of their "nice" clothes at thrift shops, and mom works for a consignment store selling used furniture).

the only regert: I grabbed a Deadpool as a merman t-shirt, and it wound up being a small. Thankfully caught at the register before paying for it (cashier noticed everything else was large, and I had grabbed it out of the large t-shirt section). I REALLY liked that shirt, damnit! :smith:

Dependability ranges, but you want a SSD more for speed. The big issue with SSDs is when they fail, they tend to do so completely (depends on the chipset they use). HDDs tend to give a bit of warning via SMART data (not always of course, but it's much easier to predict HDD death).

My very old i7 takes about 30 seconds from touching the power button to desktop login with one. It'd be half if it ran UEFI instead of BIOS.

That Lenovo is probably fine (I'd go for an i5 personally), just get a 250-500GB SSD to replace the boot drive (Samsungs come with cloning software, so long as everything on the original drive will fit on the new one, so you won't even have to do an OS reinstall), and set the 1TB spinning drive up as your secondary drive. Install whatever disk health software is available from the SSD maker. I personally won't touch anything but Samsung for SSDs, simply because they're known to be so reliable (but you do pay a bit of a premium).
