As far as I can tell Polo is just borked for me on this savegame, he hasn't given out any Atlas Passes even for the challenge tiers he's supposed to.

Is it an old save that you have carried over into 1.5+? There can be some weirdness and save breaking if you do that form old saves I hear. I just haven't run into it myself (mostly because I keep restarting for some reason).

Oh man I just got a freighter. I had no idea this was in the game. This is fun. Can you hire frigates to fly around with you, shooting pirates and sentinels? Or are they all just expeditions?

Combat frigates will help if you get attacked near your capital ship. The others have their own bonus, like free resources, or what ever. Their main use is meant to be expeditions though.

It wasn't a totally fresh game, it was a game I had saved from when I had started the game and stopped so I would skip the intro. Might have been an old enough save to bork things.

How does moving a base around work? Do I just upload it and then build a new terminal at the new location? Does it cost resources?

Building a new terminal starts a base at the new location, but to actually transfer all the resources you delete the old base, then build a "salvage container" object at the new base: everything you deleted will be in it. It's a bit of a kludge but hey.

Freighters are a great place to place all of your mission specialists in. Also a few big refiners. I suppose if you're creative you can also decorate it?

One of my wish-list for freighters is more options for being creative with the layout. It's pretty astounding that they let you just tear up all the rooms and halls and lay them out however you want to begin with, but I wish there were options for creating multi-level atriums, balconies, railings, ladders, stairs, separators between rooms that include windows, etc.. Landing on frigates is also pretty awesome and I hope they do more with that, like multicrewing one with other players for hard space combat encounters.

The most annoying thing about freighter base building is that they have ramps you can build to create additional floors. Ramps! They exist! So why can't we use the drat things in planetary bases to connect large rooms with different elevations? Also give us freighter windows. I know space around the freighter is drawn because there is a window on the bridge (and also because you could break through the walls with old style storage containers). As long as space is going to be pretty, let us see it from our space base.

Biggest gripe about freighters is how long it takes to get to the bridge. Just let me teleport to my freighter! Also you can build a personal teleporter on the frigate but it's a one way exit. Just let me teleport to my freighter!!!!

You can't build a personal teleporter on the frigate anymore.

So the more I play, the more I want to play. This game has a really slow burn start. Gathering resources, materials, blueprints and modules is time consuming, labor intensive, and involves a lot of hunting/searching for the best places to get those resources. But once you get deep enough into it to upgrade the multi-tool, get a new ship and some new guns/defenses, and a few exosuit upgrades, and the galaxy opens up and it's becoming quite brilliant. Ship combat is light, but just fun enough to enjoy dog fighting among asteroid fields. Finding a paradise planet, but with frenzied sentinels, makes it a fun dash for those graviton balls or other rare items before a herd of sentinels just blast me to pieces. I can't tell you how much I love the debriefing of expeditions, with each little stop they make having it's own small story, along with any cool loot they find. Hell, even when I had a couple of my frigates get damaged on an expedition, the fact each frigate had a landing pad and outer structure modeled so I could crawl along the outside of the ship and repair each damaged system was fun. I'll be that'll get old fast, but I love the verisimilitude. My big sticking point now is how to make a lot of money, very quickly. It feels like digging for bones, searching crashed freighters, and mining rare resources and selling the load seems to be the best way, but I feel like I'm missing something that could make it easier.

Depends on whether you want to keep roaming around and exploring with nothing to tie you down, or you'd rather choose a nice little planet somewhere and build a big ol' hydroponic facility on it. If you'd rather stick to wandering, get your hands on a really good multitool and load it the gently caress up with scanner upgrades. S-rank upgrades increase the money you get for scanning things astronomically; once you max out on them, you'll make a surprising amount of money just scanning poo poo as you wander around. It'll never make you filthy stinking rich, but it adds up quite a bit over time, and is a great supplement to your income from scrounging and selling poo poo in between doing missions in pursuit of mercenary wealth. If you just want to get as rich as possible, you pretty much gotta build a huge base full of biodomes and set up a hydroponic assembly line that lets you mass-produce the most valuable, time-to-resources-to-sell-price efficient thing you know how to craft. Then you mass produce and sell those and get atrociously rich while you slowly descend into the madness of ennui.

That's pretty much the best way in the early game. Midgame, most of your money comes from scanning animals once you have enough of the right mods on your multitool. In the late game if you want a metric fuckton of money you'll want to set up a production line in your base/freighter that starts at harvestable or dupable materials and ends at a high-value crafted item you can sell in bulk.

Wishful thinking wishlist of the Hello Games product No Man's Sky: 1. Black Space sometimes. 2. Ability to capture animals to pen them in and what not. 3. Star systems with actual orbital physics. 4. Better Space Combat for Spacing. 5. Minigames inside stations. 6. Black Space sometimes. That is all.

Oh yeah, I found the S-Rank upgrade for my scanner which increases flora/fauna money by like 9k percent, which is ridiculous. Is there an upgrade that does the same for minerals? I still haven't touched base building, I'm just having too much fun warping my freighter around and landing on different planets.

Mineral scans are pretty much always going to be largely worthless. You can get a bit from vegetation, but animals are the big money. I'm pretty sure the percentages on multiple scanner mods are multiplicative, unless I'm misremembering. It gets pretty absurd when you've maxed out your tool.

Yeah a scanner with 3 good mods in it will bring in 3-500K per animal scanned and there are lots of planets where you can get half a dozen scans within moments of landing.

I'd like for the game to ignore terrain deformation within range of a base, when it accounts for deformation to remove once you start hitting the cap, so you could have cool underground or cave bases

I know I can't be the first one, but I just met my first animal on an anomaly planet. Some kind of morphing bunch of stone plates. I tried making a screenshot of it, but it just looks like a bunch of oddly shaped stone plates without the morphing movement. Next time I'll have to remember to record a video clip of it moving, as it was quite freaky. I called it a Stone Shork, since the plate-movement made it look like the back fin of a shark moving through water, just instead of water through stone. But it's not even close to being a shark, so it's a shork. Because soil and stone and poo poo.

I would not be surprised if Hello Games as a whole has been largely just working on NMS since launch. It's still a very small team afaik. They also made money porting it to PC and more recently Xbox, also the controversial launch caused an indie game to make AAA sales numbers. They probably made enough money off it to just sit back, keep working on it, and salvage their reputation so people will be hype for the sequel or whatever they work on next. I see absolutely no reason to assume a few people are just sitting around updating NMS in their off time. It seems like the updates have been a huge effort from the company.
