Everything depends on just how widespread the national guard and SEBIN (!) support actually is. Here's hoping this ends quickly instead of all out civil war.

Hey, isnt Guaido still trying to get an amnesty bill passed? AFAIK nothing's been written into law.

I might be off base here, but Guaido wanted a pretty open ended amnesty law. Especially with the Guaido-ite in Spain that got arrested for drug smuggling charges, i don't see where his military support would come from without the amnesty bill.

Amnesty bill was passed back in January. It's in effect.

Eduardo Bolsonaro, one of the sons ofJair Bolsonaro, is going to the border with Venezuela, to "assert the situation" or something

He is the one who many times publicly defended Brazil joining the USA in a military intervention in Venezuela

Just woke up, but I'm seeing that La Carlota military base in Caracas is under the control of a group of rebel forces. Guaido is there with Leopoldo Lopez, who has been freed. There are some National Guard soldiers and SEBIN officers with them.

How did Lopez get out? I can't imagine they just let him out, but also can't imagine that he would not let himself out and then do this unless he was pretty confident in its outcome.

I hope this works out quickly... that feed you posted is looking surprisingly calm.

Hopefully Nicolás Maduro stops illegally occupying the Venezuelan government and surrenders the office to the legitimate elected president, Juan Guaidó, in an orderly fashion so that the PSUV's coup can be put down with a minimum of violence.

Lopez said that he was released by his captors. That would be the SEBIN/DGCIM.

Lopez has been trying to violently overthrow the government and getting slapped on the wrist for it for 17 years.

For an Evil Autocaratic Fascist No Good Very Bad Dictator Maduro is really bad at doing anything to dissidents besides saying "stawwwp". Same with Chavez RIP.

So I decided to look up Stratfor's US Navy tracker, which keeps updates on US carrier strike groups and amphibious ready groups (Marines, basically). The most recent update is a few days old, and caveats apply (Ships could have set sail since then, or the information might not be accurate), but I thought it was interesting that there don't appear to be any carriers anywhere near Venezuelan waters. Could be an indication that, even if the US is willing to back the opposition with words, they're not prepared to actually intervene militarily.

Guiado called for an outright revolt, as usual he has like less than a hundred actual soldier defections and one of the other 'let's violently overthrow the PSUV' faction members (leaders? Forgot) was released from house arrest during a protest. Nothing's actually happening.

I wouldn't be surprised if USNS Comfort and friends head down there though

Yeah, they've got military advisors in VZ.

Russia said they wouldn't interfere this morning; more than anything I think they're there to preclude US military action. If Guaido's successful somehow Id guess they'll just walk? Can't really fight an entire military with two planeloads of troops.

I didn't put the idea forward. I'm just saying that your post wasn't accurate nor is that 'how states work.' Relax. Right out the gate with the insult.

e: More specifically, I'm saying your insinuation that 'the USA just *has* to pick one or the other so it must be the opposition because Maduro sucks' is a false dilemma.

This is Guaido's last stand. If he succeeds, Venezuela will be plunged into a civil war.

If he fails, the Venezuelan opposition will collapse. Their dreams of a 4th Republic Restoration will be just dreams.

If he fails to preserve the democratically elected government against the Maduro coup, then Venezuela will continue to deteriorate into a failed state condition, because the fundamental problem (no one has basic necessities of life because of socialism, there's no peaceful means to change the regime, and removing sanctions won't change that) is still there no matter how many devoted readers of Jacobin post on the Internet otherwise. The "opposition" to dying as a slave is inherent in humanity and can't be extinguished, the only question is whether that impulse will be able to change Venezeula before everyone on all sides aside from the narcoterrorist elite dies of starvation.
