It's also like a 20 minute bike ride for me, Alymer feels like it's pushing closer to an hour, good for my weight loss maybe, but it means moving back to Quebec and dealing with the tax issues that implies.

I think an important realization for many of us is that the NDP doesn't run "radical" candidates not because they're cowardly but because they're not actually a leftist party. Conservatives are fine running outspoken racists and homophobes and "gender critical" folks because that's their actual ideology. They ask their members to keep it on the downlow and use the right dog-whistles, but those are core accepted "unofficial" beliefs of the party. The NDP doesn't silence socialist language because they want to keep those beliefs on the down-low to not scare away the centrists, the NDP silences and runs-out socialists because they genuinely are not at all supportive of socialism and are a centrist party.

You can say that in a good way, though. "My skill is representing the people by listening to what they want, and consulting the best experts we have to find the best way to deliver on our promises. Sometimes that means listening to the people first, and impressing on our researchers and engineers the need to innovate and fix a problem that previous administrations convinced themselves couldn't be fixed. Sometimes that means listening to the experts when they tell us such-and-such a plan won't work, and taking that back to the people with some alternatives so we can consult and find a way forward. Good politics, to me, means straddling this line, and encouraging people on all sides to give up a little bit of what they want to make sure we can all get what we need, with what we have." e: quote:“I actually came here in 81’, I have a diploma in rehab studies working with mental/physically challenged and I was recruited in Ontario to come out after I graduated with my rehab program to work at Michener Centre…I met my husband in 83’, and he was born and raised in Red Deer, and we have a family farm that’s been here since 1942, so the LaGrange family has roots in the Red Deer community. I have 7 children so I’ve been very active in the school systems.” what the gently caress are those apostrophes flakeloaf fucked around with this message at 19:12 on Apr 30, 2019 |

Yup. I've been saying it in this thread for years now, but the NDP doesn't have some hidden leftist agenda. What you see is what you get. They don't appoint radical ministers because they don't want to enact radical policies.

flakeloaf posted:Centrism generates way more post-election job opportunities for unsuccessful* candidates. This is true for elected candidates too. You're supposed to use your time as an MP to prepare for your post politics life making fistfuls of cash as a consultant or lobbyist or lawyer or businessman. That requires maintaining good relationships with the powers that be. The pressure to play nice doesn't diminish after you win, it actually increases dramatically because now you've really got something to lose.

In every riding I ever lived the Liberals were always the competitive party and the NDP were a wasted vote. If I’m going to vote for a centrist party I might as well vote for the most effective one. The NDP are an electoral joke. Their cabinets all suck and they lack any skilled ministers because anyone who wants to run for office and win on those merits already ran as a liberal or Tory.
