It was actually pretty scary. Getting fed nothing but one side's arguments, not all of which are bonkers, can paint a believable picture. Made me think about what other arguments I'm purposely fed only one side of, cause there's bound to be some. Makes me think about what a nasty danger to democracy this is, with most people deliberately misinformed about important things, about things that matter to them, for mouse clicks. gently caress my bum that's scary.

So on pallet chat: Bunnings (big Hardware/DIY) chain was fined $11million dollars a few years ago for using CHEP pallets in their warehouses. Funny thing considering their usual go-to was LOSCAM which is a competitor. https://www.smh.com.au/business/bunnings-11m-pallet-cleanser-20100511-uupr.html

Chep (american and canadian), Peco, Molson, standard 4-way junk pallets, like 9 types of plastic... We see a lot of pallets. Enough to employ four shifts of 2 people (4-on-4-off 12hr days). Back when I did shipping and distribution, junk but functional pallets were free from UPS, OK pallets were $5, new pallets were $25. I can't speak to the plastic ones. They always had to be returned. This is for 48"x40" pallets. We used to give away our broken pallets to our cardboard guy. We'd sell extra pallets to carriers. When we were short, we'd ask our UPS driver for pallets. UPS was always happy to get rid of them. In 10 years, we never paid for a pallet.

Karate Bastard posted:Google felling a crane on a child is oddly symbolic of that actually. Reading the articles from the initial analysis, they're saying the people working on the crane didn't read the assembly/disassembly instructions and removed the wrong bolts, making it very easy to tip over. This is something that the new OSHA standards that were finalized in November talks about. Certification like my company does is the equivalent to a driver's license, or maybe a learner's permit: it's an indicator that you've met the minimum competency standards to operate. It's still the employer's responsibility to ensure that the operators are actually trained on the particular equipment they're going to be using and have documentation that they were evaluated for this competency. There's a good chance that even if these guys were certified (which they may not have been, especially if they weren't in charge of operating the crane itself) they weren't properly trained before being assigned to it. For the record, I checked. We did not certify them.

The only part I’m having a hard time with is that he mentioned that maybe someone pulled all the pins at once before removing the sections, but that doesn’t jive with the earlier comment that driving the pins without the tower being supported from above is super hard. super hard, but not impossible also the pins coming out would be easier, because the column is already aligned, inserting them is tough if it isn't aligned just so, but that wouldn't be the case for removing them

He described the issue as basically a lack of trust in pilots to be able to handle an issue with the plane, so they created an automated system that would override pilot input to keep them safe. Then when the system fails, there's no way for the pilots to get around it even if they're trained and aware that the system is present and the plane gleefully crashes itself into the ground. It's an absolute travesty. Instead of using training and competency checks to make sure pilots could handle the new plane's handling quirks, they just decided it was too much work or that the pilots would never be competent enough to trust with it and tried to take it completely out of their hands with technology.

It's not about trust, if pilots had to be retrained for the new handling parameters the entire design gets moved into the 'slow and painful' FAA certification pipeline. By pretending the plane was exactly the same from the pilot's perspective, Boeing could get it certified and out to market months earlier.

I've watched a lot of Jordan Peterson. A lot of it makes sense to me and has actually helped me -especially his university lectures- and none of it threw me into apoplexics, but he was starting to grate on me so I stopped. Since youtube is unwilling to oblige me I'd be grateful if someone could recommend me an alternative point of view that I'm obviously not being fed. I've tried watching contrapoints but she's such high production values and slapstick for comedy that I'm like Christ do you have a point and if so for the love of God would you get to it please? Don't get me wrong the Jordan Peterson lobster daddy mask in the bath was hilarious, but I'm not necessarily looking for entertainment here but a reasonable point of view, and dragging JP into the bath is certainly one but not the other.
