Loud pop and pain on the medial part of my knee. Feels more meniscus than mcl, especially with how locked my knee is feeling this morning. I was looking forward to my first IBJJF in two weeks...

Finally got a chance to train again. It's been probably a month or more. I took the first two weeks of April off because of tax season, then the next week was holy week (in LatAm they take most of the week before Easter off. At least in Costa Rica, but I think it's a thing in LatAm in general). Then the week after that was... I dunno. Holiday hangover? Nobody showed up for Tuesday or Wednesday morning classes, and I caught a small cold for the normal Thursday class, which was infuriating.

Now, finally, I got to train and it was a good class. The morning class has shrunk considerably because the black belt that taught it has an insane work project going on, but a few blues and purples are still getting together to keep it going.

There is an idea of a Yuns, some kind of abstraction, but there is no real me, only an entity, something illusory, and though I can hide my cold gaze and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are probably comparable: I simply am not there.

You should have let me know you were coming by so I could introduce you to everyone. Also Danaher morning crew 4 life.

Was in half guard (top). He kicked through the knee shield and went for the Faria style single leg (which we'd been drilling) without actually clearing his bottom legs from mine. I based out and was starting to go for a darce choke when he decided he just needed to pull harder with his bottom leg and something popped.

A little hard to explain, really, but our legs were wrapped up and neither wanted to give in.

I actually considered PMing you, but the whole New York stopover was a very last minute change of plans caused by bad weather loving up my flight out of JFK. That and being hella socially awkward. I didn't catch the name of the guy I ended up drilling with, kinda wiry, facial hair, wry new york kinda ball breaking attitude. Seemed to be a regular and I think black belt but it's hard for me to tell no gi. Even without introduction I felt more welcomed there, as a slightly late arriving tourist, than I did at Rogers when I was early.

They are good. The only sub I've gotten a purple with.

My favorite is to hit them as a counter when uke underhooks me from bottom side or half. Then go to gable grip while controlling uke's head. And only when you've wriggled your arm in far enough, then transfer to hand on bicep control for the finish.

Yep, that's deffo the best way to finish. The gable grip to pry their head down into their chest to give you enough room to finish the choke is money.

And the flip side is if you defend yourself and kimura someone in the street, the best case scenario is that you've maimed someone.

Kids are fun to roll with. But grey belt and up you better take that poo poo seriously, because you better believe that 9 year old will.

Yeah I was just amazed that a kid I could shoulder press with one arm could choke me out like nothing if he got the hold in. Honestly I even let him do it because I figured "how bad could it be?" One of those things where you appreciate how much technique matters more than strength.
