as always the fun thing about US foreign policy is it clouds the situation in every country we go lumbering at, like for all I know they could somehow magically hold a completely fair and honest election in Venezuela tomorrow and Guaidó could win overwhelmingly and legitimately but it would be impossible to trust any of the news coming out about it now

It's a massive uphill battle at this point for leftists in general. Anyway, some anecdotal bs: My partner's mom really likes Biden and I don't think we could persuade her to vote for Bernie (she lives in PA so it might actually matter, though I think Biden will probably win PA too).  His dad likes Bernie but is unsure who he will vote for. I'll probably do some volunteering for Bernie in PA because, as we all know, DE is pretty much a lost cause for the primary, barring something weird happening beforehand.

At various times during the American revolution (most famously the Boston Tea Party), the American rebels dressed up in traditional native american costumes. They were trying to illustrate a point, that they no longer identified with the European countries that they and their ancestors came from, they had developed their own identity after living a while in America, that they identified themselves as people whose identity was tied to the American continent, just like the native Americans. Today this is often framed as cultural appropriation for political purposes, which it was, but I think the point was to say that they didn't identify themselves as europeans, they identified themselves as Americans, they felt something in common with the native americans. The use of their costumes and symbols even illustrated that the white immigrants were willing to assimilate themselves to native culture, at least occasionally, on some symbolic level. I want to live in an American society that embodies some part of that attitude, I see it as the only way for americans to unite as a people and move beyond these idiotic ethnic tribal conflicts we have now. I want to live in a society where americans don't identify each other by the color of their skin, or their religion, or anything else but the fact that they identify as Americans. For this to happen it requires a tremendous amount of acceptance that we currently lack. It involves, as a culture, acknowledging a bunch of harsh and bitter facts that our society currently ignores. It involves acknowledging the genocide of the indians, the grave injustices done against african-americans, and the persecution of so many other groups, even up until this day, with the persecution of latinos and muslims. gently caress it, even acknowledge the persecution that drove white people to America; in the age of Trump it seems clear that you can't have an american society that doesn't take into account the plight of the white man. And to be fair, all the first generation european immigrants who came to america were almost all fleeing wars and famines and religious persecution and other horrible situations. Fine, whatever, tie yourself to that heritage if you want, just also acknowledge the plight of every other group in our society. Acknowledge that we all had our struggles (to varying degrees), but get past that and realize for fucks sake that we are all in it together now, that we are severed from our origins, that we are now one people and that united we stand, divided we fall. This is the society I want to live in, this is the only way I see for us to move forward, and I don't see it discussed anywhere. No party or politician that I know of sees things in such a broad scope, this conversation is vacuously absent from all of our discussions about how we want to run our society outside of some references to it in the constitution I know I'm holding up the drive-through lane, this is important god drat it
