You've got to know, to understand,
Baby, take me by my hand,
I'll lead you to the promised land.
I used to make custom Starcraft maps and bind Cartman quotes to particular areas of the map, but I didn't know how to only make them once so if a Zerg player went through they'd hear Cartman screaming "respect my authoritah" repeatedly at machine gun speed.

I believe they are retweets drawn from the feed of the idiot yelling at the Lancer twitter about being too political, as proof that he is in fact a fascist. Which has been demonstrated, I suppose, but could have been done with, like, two of those? Maybe three?

Probably not directly, I've never met Pardoe in person and he comes across as something of a misguided history buff. That does mean he's possibly fascist adjacent, but I don't think it's born of malice or racism directly. Pardoe and Coleman just have a thing for the "plucky underdog" which is why both really favored the Capellan Confederation. BattleTech's setting has some inherently fascist elements but does a pretty good job (directly or indirectly) pointing out the flaws with feudalism and fascism. Victor Steiner-Davion's cronyism is ruinous for his nation, Kai Allard-Liao is the Great Man who Does Nothing, Daoshen Liao is a (highly capable and effective) madman whose belief in his own divinity just so happens to translate to the general betterment of his state (he believes he is the physical embodiment of the Capellan Confederation). The nobility who are the most openly "heroic" are always shown to be absolute monsters.

Victor Steiner-Davion has his cousin Ryan Steiner assassinated and has Josha (Hallas) Marik replaced with a body double because those options were more expedient than a trial (Ryan Steiner) or explaining to Thomas (Hallas) Marik that his son had died of cancer despite the best efforts of the NAIS, that he would be naming the cancer wing of the NAIS after Joshua, and sending one of his favorite croneys to escort the boy's ashes home, and please don't stop sending upgrades to our Clan-fighting troops, we knew curing Leukemia would be a long-shot and here are the records that prove the NAIS did everything in its power to do so, etc.

Its not the main purpose of the thread obviously, but I do feel there is some merit in documenting/demonstrating just how prevalent it is.

The example above is like such a textbook example of how ‘let’s keep politics out of our games’ is like 9 out of 10 times fash/fash-adjacent shielding. I even agree with the sorta basic sentiment! Politics talk can quickly turn toxic. Like even between people who really agree on everything, except maybe like orthodox Marx vs early Lenin or something, it can get kinda out of hand, but in the past like 10 years, it’s almost always a bigot or white nationalist or something who goes ‘let’s keep the politics out of it’. Especially on the internet obviously.

I also think bideo james need a thread like this. Though I imagine it’d would hit toxic levels pretty fast. It’s not as reasonable a subforum :)

99% of the time when people say "Let's keep politics out of this," they only mean politics that aren't theirs.

The most obvious example is American football, which is a celebration of nationalism from start to finish, but don't you dare use it as a venue to express your own politics.

I believe so, and my guess is that it was less from overt Lost Causer stuff among the staff - though I don't doubt some of them probably were/are Lost Causers - and more the decision to base Raynor and the frontier guys heavily on the American South.

the initial portrayal of Terran Marines in Starcraft were as drugged-up violent hillbilly caricatures so I don't think giving them Confederate imagery was meant as a sign of approval

EDIT: I say initial because they drop this angle pretty hard after the first game iirc. They still keep the Confederate theming though! That sure makes it a lot harder to defend.

Yeah original Starcraft definitely portrays the Confederacy as incompetent, evil, and incredibly poor spoken. I think they used Space Confederates because they needed an obvious bad guy so you'd be extra shocked to learn Mengsk and his Dominion were also bad guys all along. Jim Raynor, and thus the player, are driven right into the arms of Mengsk by said evil Confederate incompetence.

Which gets me thinking, the chuds don't really consider themselves political. Politics is boring. It's rabble-rousing and complaining. Politics is caring enough about something to Get Mad. No, to them their beliefs and ideology are not politics, it's just the way things are and the communists and libtards would realize that if they stopped caring so much about politics. They're just trying to be themselves while you're the one sowing dissent and making everyone uncomfortable. BattleMaster

"Politics" and "political correctness" as pejoratives are super huge red flags to me and are dangerous. They are stealthy ways of signalling gross poo poo that sneaks by a lot of people because many people won't think very hard about it and agree by default that bringing "politics" into things or "political correctness" are bad things because of decades of media portraying "politics" as pointless slapfights and "political correctness" as out of control government censorship. A lot of people are terrified of being accused of doing those things and will back off if accused, or won't think much and agree by default if someone else is accused of those things.

So lately CHUDs use phrases like "political correctness out of control" to refer to non-white or LGBT or women characters, or "bringing politics into it" by saying stuff like maybe people shouldn't die in a gutter if they get sick, etc., and a lot of people don't think anything of it. It's really insidious because people who weren't paying attention will automatically agree.

So I'm glad Lancer's response to that crap was essentially "gently caress you." I like it when people aren't willing to give up their convictions in the hope that it gets them a few more dollars or a few more followers
