Better (harder ) question: how much does modern LP owe its existence to the users who showed up for the porn and then stuck around for the non-porn LPs? I mean, I have no idea how you'd go about answering that question, but it's difficult to overestimate the amount of interest that porn can draw.

Namtab posted:The issue is basically it being impossible to tell who is posting ironically and who is posting "ironically" Is it, really? Ironic racism is still racism. Ironic bad is still bad. Ironic creepy is still creepy. I’d argue, SA has changed on all of these points, so a hentai-LP might just work. Though, as funny as I found the hentai game reviews ten years ago, the same reason that porn game LPs might not be a disaster is the same reasons there’s probably no need to try: people are less edgelordy than 10 years ago.

If I were to ever make a case for porn game LPs at this point in time, it'd be because I like seeing weird and/or bad games shown off where people can laugh or over the content, and I feel like porn games have a lot of potential for that kind of content. Not that long ago, a game called House Party was released, and you can find lots of videos of it on YouTube of people just having a great time laughing at how bad the game is. Of course, the game is also pretty drat rapey and gross, and that's a good case against porn game LPs too. Even if you can find humor in the absurdity of the games, they're still filled with some really questionable or outright horrible stuff that you're now subjecting other people too, and maybe we don't want the reputation and association with that kinda stuff. Leave the rape humor to the pros, like Pewdiepie.

It's the typical shift in any market. It starts off big, a ton of money is there to be made so a lot of people pile in to get a cut, the supply outpaces the demand, then things eventually slow down until it finds an equilibrium. I still really enjoy them, but it's more as a background noise now rather than a dedicated viewing experience. The downturn could also be because the main driver were kids and kids are fickle. It used to be you just needed to scream and make faces, but that's losing its luster (I hope to god it is anyway). I still wish I had the voice/personality/humor for streaming or Youtube videos though. Would be nice to earn enough some extra money. My talent is in writing though, and nobody wants to read, let alone pay for it.

I LP because... I can't remember why because it's been so long since last I did it. And then I ran out of games I considered myself moderately good at and were relatively easy to do.

Personally, the last 2 paragraphs are what really hit for me. I prefer LPs, both making and watching, because the final product seems much more "complete". Like, you know that the video contains exactly what the LPer wants to show you, assuming half-decent editing. Some of this is that SA elitism that you guys were discussing a couple days ago, but even in the early days of streaming I got that vibe that people liked doing it more because it was easier. You can just hit the stream button and then play and not worry about editing your video or audio, or doing multiple takes to show something off just right. All the things that would get ripped on in a VLP like messing around in the menus, repeated deaths, and backtracking are all just considered "part of the magic" of streaming. I can kind of get that it's a more authentic experience sometimes, but it never feels like you're seeing the game in its best light.

I still remember some controversy or something from a couple years back where people on Youtube were getting all up in arms over being asked to put in even the basic amount of editing (i.e. doing more than just recording and commentating over a game, throwing that up on Youtube without even looking at it and calling it a day). Going by that, streaming becoming the more popular way to show off a game - or more likely the personality playing it - seems like the natural progression, since it removes all the steps involved beyond "press button to record, play game while commentating, press button again to stop recording". Keep in mind though I'm biased in favor of "regular" LPs because the part where I'm editing videos is half the fun. More than half, on some occasions.

Then again, most of the big personalities in Youtube LP nowadays just record their games and ramble like they're streaming, then hand the footage to someone else to edit, which seems to consist mainly of adding goofy music and subtitles when needed and cutting only what they absolutely can't put on the Internet.
