A lot of Miller's worst traits are basically there from day one. It's actually why I think Elektra: Assassin is the most interesting thing he did, because you get Sienkiewicz trying to parse what Frank's written and as a result I think it actually displays Miller's best and worst qualities more rawly than nearly anything else.

Definitely check the Mike Grell Green Arrow stuff starting with Longbow Hunters. It's a pretty defining run on the character. A lot of people liked Jeff Lemire's run, and I thought Kevin Smith's wasn't awful and largely was absent of Smithisms.

Edit:

Shazam: Get that Jeff Smith book. Kingdom Come is fantastic if you haven't already read it (though not a Captain Marvel story). Convergence: Shazam was good. I'm sure I read it, but can't remember specifically, but the JLA/JSA crossover surely has to be good.

Thanos: Silver Surfer Epic Collection, Infinity Gauntlet, and Infinity for sure (but Infinity is part of the whole Hickman Avengers and you should just read all of that). I haven't read Cosmic Ghost Rider but people seem to like it.

Is the New 52 and current Johns Shazam worth a look? It sounds like the movie pulled a decent amount from it (albeit making a big improvement MOVIE SPOILERin having Billy's mom actually just abandon him instead of the convenient dead parent hook)

I haven't read it, but I think LOSH: The Great Darkness Saga is the big Darkseid story after Kirby's stuff.

I liked the Great Darkness Saga when I read it but the Legion was new to me then so I probably missed a lot.

Fortunately I’ve read a lot more since then. I should reread it now!

I enjoyed the original IDW run but I'm also not super-familiar with 2000AD so I'm probably not the right person to ask if you are.

Well.... it's fine. The IDW series are not what I would recommend to people who want to try out Judge Dredd, but they're not total stinkers, either. I haven't read all of them, but they do seem to be missing the sharper edge you have in the really great Dredd stories and are just standard action/adventure comics instead. In the IDW stuff I've read there haven't been moments that made me go, "Wow, Dredd/the Judges are really hosed up," like the good 2000AD stuff does.

So I popped into marvel unlimited and saw they have simonsons Thor run, but it looks like they have the recolored versions from 2011 or so and man alive it just looks awful compared to the original coloring. Is there a way to read the original version digitally?

The 'Visionaries' collections on Comixology aren't recoloured (judging by preview pages.)

If it helps save money, I think the recoloured issues on MU only cover up till the end of the Surtur Saga, issue 353. I just got to issue 354 and it's back to the old colouring. Hopefully it lasts.
