I have a friend who wrote a book and I checked it out of our library instead of buying it.  It's... not to my taste. I've been struggling for weeks to get past the first 30 pages. Of course, neither point will I be telling her. I wish I COULD tell her there's copies of her book at 10 libraries in our system though, that was cool and good to see.

If you've ever subscribed to a journal, you'll note that they have separate rates for individuals and libraries/corporations, because the idea is that while people will sometimes share their journal, they're not doing it on an institutional scale. Similarly with software licenses, etc. I'm surprised books aren't treated in the same way in the US, but it seems that it's Israel (along with Canada and not as many countries as I had thought) was the outlier.

I think for those academic journals, researchers and students are making an indeterminate number of copies of individual articles for their work. Lending out a book is no different than lending out a power tool like Home Depot does.

Most revolutions improved the life’s of the poor even ones that in the end swung back conservative made some gains that couldn’t be taken away. The only ones that didn’t were the milquetoast ones who weren’t even trying

Tsarist Russia can be worse than Stalinism and we can still call Stalin really loving bad. Russians can be better off under Communism and still be hosed compared to literally everyone else.
