Listening to Howard talking to Conan about being his best interview. Honestly, it is a fantastic interview and I don't think a bad choice. It made me wonder... not that Conan would be a replacement since he and Howard are very different, but when Howard retires (likely in a couple years) if SiriusXM decides to take some of that $90m salary and bring in Conan and Andy. They are already playing around with a podcast and the Conan TV show has had a rocky life on TBS. He brings an existing audience, can do bits, is an experienced interviewer who says he wishes he could do more longform work, and the two of them are good with banter. I actually think it would work well.

I thought having Jimmy Kimmel in the studio to start the show was refreshing, just to have another voice that wasn't Robin for the opening hour.

Article attacking Howard's claim that he's evolved.

Despite the author's claim, that doesn't really read like its been written by a fan of the show. Wendy has been on air, what, maybe once or twice a year for the last few years? I can't remember the last time I heard Gary referred to as "Horse Tooth Jackass" (that was Sal's shtick circa 1998).

As far as looking for flaws in the "listen, the show has evolved" mantra, I think there are many other examples that could have been chosen instead.

SUCK A MALE CAMEL'S DICK WITH MIRACLE WHIP!!

quote:

Yet Stern, who has vilified such #MeToo monsters as Harvey Weinstein and Les Moonves, almost always introduces Quivers’ segment with crude songs, sung by fans, about her breast size or their masturbatory fantasies about her or the graphic ways they’d like to sexually degrade her.

This is a woman who survived childhood molestation by her father. It began when she was 11 years old. She has written about it and spoken of it on the show. Quivers has called it a “nuclear explosion in my life,” yet Stern still uses her childhood trauma as a punchline, often.

I'm not sure I agree with everything i that article either, but this seems quite accurate.

Hasn't Robin actually said that learning to defuse and laugh at her trauma is one of her ways of coping? Robin and Howard are so close I doubt he would keep this going if she really was bothered by it.

Yeah, this. There's no way he'd keep going if Robin told him to stop.

Also, she's an incredible narcissist, so with regards to the songs about her body and loving her, I'm sure she enjoys the attention.

I just browsed through the ePub version of the book. I thought it would be 90% interviews... it's more like 97% interviews.

The write ups before each interview are not even that interesting.

I don't know who this book is for. Certainly not for fans, and I don't see why non fans would be interested either. I am reading some of the excerpts, and they are just not interesting at all.

This is why I don't understand when people say the show has "gone soft". The only things that really changed was he doesn't call people "fags" any more (nobody I know does, and it was really common to hear up until the mid 2000s, mostly from people who had no problem with gay people by the way) and he doesn't rabidly lash out at celebrities as much as he used to. His shtick at hating everyone in Hollywood kind of got old because it seemed disingenuous. Everyone knows he's insanely rich and it was stupid for him to pretend he didn't hang out with people living the high life. And he still shits on certain celebrities when it's appropriate.

So it seems like everyone who thinks his show sucks now is upset he doesn't use anti-gay slurs, doesn't froth with rage when Jennifer Aniston is seen with expensive jewelry, doesn't use the term "retard" any more, and doesn't lie about having celebrity friends any longer. Oh and the no more strippers and porn stars thing, which I have to admit bored me to loving tears when it was a daily thing in the mid to late 2000s. Yeah it's great for Howard TV on Demand but it sucks for radio. I think that's why he stopped. Not because he thinks it's wrong or something. I guess I just don't see how he became "PC Howie" when he still does prank calls, Robin songs, talks to Wendy about making GBS threads her diaper, talks about masturbation and porn viewing on a daily basis. Maybe I am wrong but I don't think he sucks any more or less than 5-10 years ago, though I do admit I miss Artie, but that has nothing to with Stern "becoming PC". Maybe I am missing something but I enjoy the show so I don't care enough to dig deeper in an effort for me to enjoy it less.

I honestly think he's one of the funniest people on the show. How he does those Alex Jones and Brent Hatley impressions and his insanely quick wit is incredible. I lolled hard when he said "the Sandy Hook janitor"

It don't know how two people can hear two different things while listening to the same show. I thought this is the best interview Howard has ever done. He was authentic, Terry pushed back on some of his answers (rating women, etc). I don't think this is anything like the Howard we get on the air.

Her rebuttal piece: https://nypost.com/2019/05/15/howard-stern-proves-he-hasnt-really-changed-at-all/

She attacks the book as being only about 20 pages of new material which Howard claims took him 2 years to write. The rest of the book is just interviews converted to print.

Fair enough, if it works it works. One persons trauma something is another persons therapy something else.

Since the book is out, has anyone heard the big secret reveal? Is he a grandfather? If there are only 17 pages of "new" material someone has to have read that far by now.

To be fair, it's really hard for a young person to get into Stern. I started listening daily sometime around 2004 and it took me drat near a year to get caught up on the staff, their past drama, who they were and what they did, etc. Anyone listening for the first time would be like "who the hell is JD and why do I care that this moron keeps his entire life savings is in his checking account?". Plus I'm imagining young people just listen to podcasts about video games or conspiracies or why all women are sluts or something. You seriously need to take like a 6 hour class on the Stern show if you wanted to start listening today.

I don't think it's either. Most of my friends were loving lunatics when we were in our early 20s and now that we're all in our late 30s we're all dads who maybe go out once a month. The whole thing gets stale. Wouldn't it be really lame if he still threw baloney at women's butts in 2019? Not even from a PC aspect. It would just be boring.

I think he did a lot of that poo poo because that's what got him a show on E. Remember, when he had his CBS show in the late 90s/early 2000s the ratings were so high that he actually beat Saturday Night Live. I think he stopped all that stuff once Howard TV went away. People viewing videos in the Sirius app isn't giving him any extra money, plus it's not bringing in new listeners like his E and CBS shows did, so he has no real incentive to keep doing the stripper thing any more.
