Yes, it was common everywhere, but today it's a less common notion in most places, Japan being one of the exceptions. Also, while Final Fantasy took inspiration from D&D directly, Dragon Quest got that more indirectly, through Wizardry and Ultima, as their is a noticeable drift going from D&D to those games to DQ which doesn't exist for FF.

Personas 3-5 have a weird obsession with the whole "forbidden student/teacher relationship" trope. First off, you have Kenji and his whole "I'm gonna date a teacher!" plan, where you're required to encourage him to pursue it. Then you have the Hermit link, where it's revealed that "Maya" is your own homeroom teacher, and that she has a crush on you (though she doens't realize that you're the person she's been playing the MMO with). And then at the end when she discovers it was you the whole time, she actually asks you out before retracting it because she realizes it's inappropriate. Persona 4 appears to subvert this with Kashiwagi, but in the end, it feels more like the game is condemning Kashiwagi herself for being old and having an odious personality than it is condemning the idea of teacher/student relationships. Then come Persona 5 and your very first story arc is centered around a teacher abusing his position and his power over the students in a horrible way that makes it seem like someone on the team finally realized, "Oh, hey, hosed up power dynamics like this aren't actually cool or sexy and it's actually a really loving horrible thing." ... but then you unlock the Temperance Confidant and it's just... why.

For some reason, all this talk of student teacher romance is making me think of the upcoming Fire Emblem game, where you play a teacher at a military academy (or something close enough), since due to how the support system works, being able to romance one of your students seems quite likely. Can't wait to see people's response to if that turns out to be the case. And if I'm not wrong, being the teacher in that situation isn't exactly commonly, more commonly you're playing (or are friends with) the student romancing the teacher (outside of hentai anyway, but let's not go into depth on that topic) in games. I can have moments of... eccentricity and sometimes be quite curious about things. Please forgive me if I do something foolish or rude.

So, knowing that this was a thing that was going to happen, I did have a small hope. I was hoping that she'd say no, but do the cliche "I'll wait for you to 1) be legal, and 2) not be my student anymore" thing. That'd be a lot more palatable: as is Kawakami got herself conflicted and knows she shouldn't, the part that really sours it imo is that she does the 180 Horny Kickflip. Ah well. Out of the different relationships with adults, I don't know if it's my least favorite? Egh.

Alright these lines are pretty bad. But that wasn't as terrible as I was expecting. Until she actually does become your girlfriend. I thought she was going to turn you down like the teacher in P3, but still be close with you or something. You know, bringing up why the relationship wouldn't work and then just going "Ah well, let's do it anyway" only makes it look worse.

I feel like dating Futaba isn't quite as weird, even if going out with a person who you just helped develop social skills not that long ago does seem skeevy. I know it's not the intention of the writers, but it kinda reminds me of how a guy in Hotel Dusk had a crush on a character who was 18-years-old, but then backed off when he found out she was mentally 8-years-old due to trauma/being in a coma for ten years.
