Mister Facetious posted:Just how narrow is the FoV on the thing? iirc the problem is that the tesla autopilot doesn't use lidar, but rather processing images through a regular rear end camera, so that the system can miss things like a white truck that is roughly the same color as the sky moving perpendicularly to the roadway. which is why with any self driving technology that is on the market the driver needs to be vigilant of all potential hazards, except that is absolutely not how the product is being sold or how people use it, so easily preventable fatalities e: here https://www.tesla.com/blog/tragic-loss quote:Following our standard practice, Tesla informed NHTSA about the incident immediately after it occurred. What we know is that the vehicle was on a divided highway with Autopilot engaged when a tractor trailer drove across the highway perpendicular to the Model S. Neither Autopilot nor the driver noticed the white side of the tractor trailer against a brightly lit sky, so the brake was not applied. The high ride height of the trailer combined with its positioning across the road and the extremely rare circumstances of the impact caused the Model S to pass under the trailer, with the bottom of the trailer impacting the windshield of the Model S. Had the Model S impacted the front or rear of the trailer, even at high speed, its advanced crash safety system would likely have prevented serious injury as it has in numerous other similar incidents. It's not like the driver was distracted cause they assumed they could trust their autopilot, they just didn't notice.

You can’t put them on a “$35k” car and have it still be that price. I know there are people working on bringing down the cost, like Waymo. But scale isn’t there yet and if you want to sell cars now you super swear will be self driving, you have no choice but to lie.

I thought the color that Tesla factories hated the most was black. Truthfully I don't know how those stories keep getting swept under the rug but I guess Tesla PR does a better job than their QA.
