A lot of older gay men I’ve known (dad gay, so what?) had relationships with older men in their youth; that was somewhat normal and at least for them a warm introduction to the community. Remember that they could not just date other dudes in their high school, there was no Internet, and even gay-themed non-porno was obscene and couldn’t be mailed a lot of places. So all they could do was listen to gossip about ‘where the faggots were’ and go there to meet dudes that were like them. NAMBLA got a lot of support from men that grew up finding this normal; thus Ginsberg and other older gay men defending it, including actual non-pedophiles I actually know (although we have not discussed this since the late 90’s lol). I really don’t know if NAMBLA started as a male homosexual group in an subculture where adolescents having sex with older men was considered a normal part of life, or if it was always just about loving children. I know it sure sold itself as the first, quite successfully. I grew up in the 80’s, and the homophobia that was normal then was loving insane by modern standards. I can’t imagine how growing up gay in my era would have hosed up my head, and that was mild by previous standards. So that is probably another part of the defense of NAMBLA, they were on ‘our side’ when that was incredibly rare. Goddamn this brought back a lot of old memories, like news reports of actual child porn being sold in Times Square. Or the Mad Magazine paperbacks I bought had these older pieces wherein ‘jailbait’ was a thing. You know ‘14 gets you 20’ hahaha. Or ‘Lolita’ being sexy, not the autobiography of a self-involved self-justifying piece of poo poo that can’t deal with actual women. Goddamn a lot of poo poo has just been swept under the rug and we pretend it never happened. ITT funny culture poo poo I just remembered.

honestly reading about ginsberg's nambla activism up to the 80s i got the impression the argument was that age shouldn't be the sole criteria on which to criminalize some relationships which just by coincidence happened to target gay activists that were consistently harassed by the state. i don't know anything about the org now and i imagine after they were featured on that early south park episode their message has been significantly distorted, but like their original stated purpose wasn't unilaterally unreasonable, especially considering the specific methods used to marginalize gay men throughout all of american history.
