Fun gruesome black crowned night heron story: when I was an undergrad I was hired as a field assistant in a behavioral study on cattle egret chicks. We sat in a blind from dawn to dusk recording aggressive behavior between chicks in the same brood (they kill their own siblings). We had all these ways of noting down different events and behaviors, including the abbreviation BCNH, for black crowned night heron. This is because the BCNH considers cattle egret chicks to be a delicious snack and will munch on them like crazy. The truly crazy thing is their preferred method of whacking a cattle egret chick: they find a branch just above the chick and land there, and then they reach down and grab the cattle egret chick by the head. The egret chick's instinctive reaction to this is to grab onto the branch they're standing on as hard as they possibly can, which allows the BCNH to just yank up and pop their heads clean off.
