I agree, it's like they're trying too hard to make it look old. Then again I turn off pixelation on Dusk.

Doom's monster design and sprites being fantastically readable even in 2020 is a magnificent achievement.

Except in the old days of the 90s, companies used professional artists with talent and aesthetic sense.

In more Doom-posting, I just got a few more fps by activating the 'prefer max. performance' in the Energy control Mode option in the Nvidia panel. Maybe the gpu wasn't considering GZDoom as a real game :arghfist:

I kinda dig Nightmare Reaper's... aesthetic, if you can call it that, but hell, I love watching movies in lovely quality.

I feel like I would be fine with it if it weren't for the dynamic lighting/postprocessing, high fidelity sound/music, and modern shooter mechanics. It wants to look like a shareware era game without feeling like one, which misses the point entirely IMO. It's like the developer decided to call it old-school just to make up for a complete lack of visual design talent. Minecraft is ugly as sin but its visual simplicity is in service of its mechanics. There's just no reason for it with this game.

This is why I still feel the HD pack with shadows, god rays, bloom, atmospherics, etc (not to mention the ray tracing demos) look really weird and worse than the base game.

The problem is where actual retro shooters tried to look as modern as possible, many modern retro shooters try to look as lovely as possible, often while still making use of tons of deferred rendering tricks and advanced post-processing. When you walk past a pixellated wall in Doom, you can still get the sense of the texture it's abstractly trying to represent. When I see the shiny normal mapping on those rock(?) textures in that Nightmare Reaper video, it no longer looks like an abstract representation of a rock wall. It looks more like a realistic representation of a lumpy cube covered in slime.

This is a good point; Nightmare Reaper suffers from trying to ape the graphics style of an early 90s garbage Wolf 3D clone made in someone’s bedroom with the level geometry of a clunky mid-90s FPS combined with the effusive particles and garish colored lighting of the late 90s. All of which is interpreted badly through 2019 tech.

A sorely needed consultant space for indies is visual design. If you are an indie game dev with < 5 people working on it and even if there is some art talent that still doesn't mean you have anyone who can design something coherent. Trying to hire that talent is pretty difficult and is going to be way over budget anything a tiny indie can afford. You can hire artists to produce specific art but no one to tie it together.

Someone on the forums talked about putting together a business to provide a pdf of art guidelines based on what a team wanted to do but I don't think it ever happened which is a shame. Services for a polish pass over art assets would be pretty invaluable too. The opposite works really well though. Lots of successful tiny team indie games had a visual designer who contracted out most of the art but was doing a polish pass over the work to make it coherent.

There is something about Chaser that makes me unable to take it off my list o' games to play someday. It's so huge, and terrible, and repetitive, and well-meaning, and nonsensically sci-fi, and simplistic, and in-engine-cut-sceney to completely ignore.

The one time I tried to play it, my character's head and hands were invisible in the cutscenes I think. I vaguely remember washing out somewhere around slaughtering endless clones of black suited ninjas in generic asian-styled corridors?

e: I think when I got it, it inexplicably still had multiplayer servers still running, and the maps were horrible. Servers were always full of players robotically and endlessly playing the same maps, as though they were bots. Maybe they were, but I remember them being people.
