Out of curiosity what makes her better for you?

She's an embarrassing mum and is very funny from the episodes i've seen.

She's also kind of a more realistically bad Mum? She clearly loves her kids but she's an immature person who hasn't treated raising them as seriously as she probably should. Her daughter had some serious poke trauma and while Lusamine cares about Lillie, she didn't really do much about it or try to figure out what the cause was.

Not that being more grounded is necessarily better than how over the top she is in the games (because that's cool and fun) but she's definitely a more fleshed out person, which is a plus. The anime just gets to spend more time on its characters, we get to see what Lusamine is like when not overdosed on Jellyfish venom, and we learn more about her from things other than post game journals or from other characters recounting what she used to be like.

She's a better villain in the games though, if that's what we're ranking. That's no question.

Practice proper gun's safety.
I liked in Detective Pikachu where they show the ancient cave paintings of catching a pokemon and the pokemon depicted is Fat Pikachu. It was a fun little thing. Fat Pikachu is my friend.

He's been tapping into Aunt May's bank account!
Didn't I kill him with a HELICOPTER?
I like what an earnest boy Ash is, and an anime that doesn't dedicate 90% of its episodes to him beating up on Jessie and James and instead lets him have a foster family really rounds him up as a character.

I can definitely appreciate the anime showing what she was like before getting coked out of her brains on neurotoxin. Helps put her personality into perspective and how the stuff effected her. But I guess I prefer the character arc she was given simply because as a villain she's pretty tragic and interesting. At least as far as pokemon villains go anyway. I think I'm more of a detective pikachu narrative kind of person as opposed to the anime but that's purely personal preference.

I know I've essentially flogged this horse into a fine mush by now but honestly I just want a different main character. At this point I think I'll take just about anything as long as it's not Ash. And it's genuinely sad because I loved him as a kid, but when you keep shilling the same character and reverting any development or change they get every season eventually you just resent them for stifling everything else. I would've loved it if he had a couple arcs won a tournament then went on to become a mentor to younger trainers or something. That would've been fine, but the fact he's always ten and every season is a repeat and all other characters get derailed to fit into his narrative is just a massive bummer. Especially when the games get interesting characters or story telling it gets thrown in the trash. Look at what they did to Lusamine in the anime. Christ even worse at look at what they did to N. Nobody can be TOO interesting so they have to bland themselves down so they don't outshine Ash. And seeing as he's just a stock shonen personality it means a lot has to get cut to try and keep him relevant.

The problem with Ash isn’t that he’s just a stock shonen character that isn’t allowed to develop or make any meaningful progress in his vague goal. It’s that he’s a stock shonen main character from the 90’s. He’s a relic these days. When the movies add interesting kids who do develop, Ash clashes horribly because he’s so outdated and simplistic in comparison.

Women are wonderful animals, they should be making music and writing novels about having a complex relationship with your mother.
OK, gently caress this game. I already complained about too many Pokemon causing confusion, and that's also true of sleep. Too many Pokemon can do those and it makes fights take longer and is no fun. But now I'm sitting though a fight with five bellsprouts. Bellsprouts can cause sleep, and do a move that prevents you from switching out Pokemon. And since there's five of them, it's guaranteed that both of those will happen each turn. Horde battles were already a really stupid no-fun idea, but this is loving misery.

Just watched AG157, "Time Warp Heals All Wounds." Dogasu was right that having a time travel story that doesn't involve Celebi two episodes after an episode about Celebi was an odd choice. Especially since Meowth acts skeptical about the possibility of time travel, as though he's already forgotten about Celebi. And there isn't even much of an explanation of why they're time travelling (which it feels like the dubbers are lampshading a little with Meowth's "Yeah, I'll buy that."). Given some other elements of the episode, I guess it's supposed to be a "Christmas miracle"? That would at least explain the lack of butterfly effect Dogasu complains about.

It's both really. It's sort of like a creative luddism where everything else is growing and developing but people like TRADITION™ so lets stuff this broken old calculator in there to keep the fans happy. I mean granted I've never really met a super passionate Ash fan, most people are more or less "eh" on him anyway. I'm not even one of these spiteful fucks that wants him dead. I just want his story wrapped the gently caress up already so we can get an interesting main character with a tighter narrative. I'm also aware there's no motivation to make this happen and have no faith of it ever coming to pass.

Ow, my eye
Dawn is arguably just a big a main character as Ash in Diamond/Pearl, and it's a shame they've never done it to that level aside from that. May and Serena have spotlight episodes, but there's also plenty of stretches where they're clearly just supporting cast like, say, Brock.

Yeah, the placement is weird but I honestly think Time-Warp Heals All Wounds is the best standalone AG episode, and not explaining how the time travel works was definitely the right call.

The characters of the day are compelling, the backstory is dark but the episode never loses that Pokémon feel and "A member of Team rocket does a temporary face turn because they're touched" plots are almost always good.

I also found it weird that they did an episode about ninjas set near Fuchsia City and didn't use it to introduce Janine. But maybe I'm the weird one and the anime writers are normal people who don't feel the need to obsessively work in every character, location, and plot point from the games. :v:

If there's not enough traffic for an anime-specific thread - and I don't think there is - I don't see the harm in discussing it here, much like people were discussing Detective Pikachu. I ain't a mod tho, so...

As a lapsed fan I had a lot of fun with both Moon and Ultra Sun and I'd recommend picking those up as they strike a decent balance between nostalgia (because of the Alolan forms, you'll see a lot of familiar faces), really nice QoL changes (No HMs! Good EXP Share! Level Up Stalls!) and what modern Pokemon is. Let's Go is basically a remake of Yellow with Pokemon Go-style capturing and a different random battle system.

Your options for a Fire-type are *EXTREMELY* limited in Sinnoh; in Diamond and Pearl, Ponyta was literally your only choice for a Fire Type if you didn't choose Chimchar (outside of trading). Platinum adds Houndour and Magby as options, so you're not quite as screwed if you want a fire-type.
