Half the labour movement is content to buy off the Liberals in exchange for narrowly targeted concessions (the CAW) and then the ones that have stuck with the NDP tend to be extremely risk averse, don't otherwise get involved in politics, and tend to encourage the NDP to be cautious and centrist. The collective financial and organizational power of the 54 or so major unions in Canada, were it to be used in a concerted way, would immediately dwarf the collected resources of all three major parties and every bought and paid for corporate think tank combined.

unions got hosed when they made them legal, because as conditions for making it legal they made them toothless, and made them financially solvent at the cost of alienating dumb workers who don't want to join unions by making them pay. Bring back illegal unions, the only way to negotiate with capitalists is when they fear for their lives.
