Had some time on a flight to plan out the return of my 8 world project. Here are a few things I'm excited to try:

- Swinging Claws in a castle stage. Lots of fun to be had with timing your swing to avoid fire bars and lava bubbles. I wonder if the the claws get destroyed if they go under lava?

- Fast scroll koopa cart stage. Looping tracks with the goal of collecting red coins, so that the player has to cruise through it at least a couple times, with different goals in mind. Certainly Mario Kart inspired.

- Athletics style ski slope stage. Gotta put that snow+night theme to good use somehow!

One thing I'm unhappy with: it seems that the rising water levels are forest course theme only. Would have really loved to make an SMB3 style naval armada style stage.

Man, I love how many cool objects they revealed that are not only useful, but can also make the levels much prettier. Colored pipes are probably my favorite! There are a few weird things, though. Much like many people, I really don't get why the water is only available in the Forest theme. That's a bummer. Not like addtion of "add water/lava" button would make the editor so much more complicated. With 3D World there's a lot of new things, quite a few grabbable objects, some have interactions with ground pound, and overall, porting every single one would probably delay the game for a pretty long time, not to mention it would feel kinda bloated.

Also not sure how I feel about night themes having their own gimmicks that, I assume, can't be turned off. Not that the gimmicks are bad, but 3-1 from the original Super Mario Bros was probably my favorite level in that game, and I'd like to mess around with night theme without all kinds of weird poo poo going on.

One thing I'm really not liking is the addition (I assume the first game didn't have it) of the "boo" button. Like, sure, I'll probably use it for those insane courses that require glitches, luck and pixel-perfect jumps to beat, but I wouldn't want children to be downvoted into oblivion because they had some fun with a million thwomps.

Why would a child care if his or her level was downvoted?

I'm curious what the night effect for the water, castle, and airship theme is gonna be.

edit: I'll make a prediction and say the night water effect is gonna be ceiling water like an inverse of the forest theme.

I really hope all the stuff tied to night time mode gets de-coupled from it.

Like how fun would it be to have a level full of 1-up mushrooms and the poison-up mushrooms and you have to run through them all and stay net-positive or die, etc.

I saw somebody suggest that the "Boos" might not be shown to the level creator but just used to determine what gets shown in endless mode. It's basesless speculation, but it seems a Nintendo thing to do.

Eh, I just feel like if it's gonna be like the Like bar on youtube, kids are going to get discouraged from making things. But yeah, it's probably not going to get shown.

Yeah, the brief glimpse of the online course selection screen only displays hearts and number of plays. Hopefully that'll make it so that Super Expert has actually challenging levels and not bullshit kaizo block/thwomp over the starting position/door into pit levels, or even stages like the ones Panga makes, which are cool but have no place in a mode where your lives can run out.

I don’t care if you’re age 1 or 100, if your level has trap doors or a thwomp over the staring position you know what you did and deserve to be discouraged. The problem will be people abusing the boo button on good levels out of jealousy, spite, or just being bad at Mario. I like the idea of using it to suppress levels but I don’t know if I trust Nintendo to implement that well. They already delete levels that don’t get stars in a particular timeframe and lock you out of reuploading them which in some cases is a good thing but in others it’s just going to be a case of lack of discovery options which from what we’ve seen they’ve done nothing to address.

I was leery letting people downvote levels at first, but yesterday I booted up SMM and tried to do the 100 mario challenge on expert and like 9 out of every 10 levels was just one-way deathtrap doors, levels that become impossible to win if you don't play exactly the way the creator intended, or short levels that give you 10 seconds and demand that you take advantage of a physics glitch

so I changed my mind, downvoting is good and vital

Everyone should probably get in the habit of making a backup save of levels before uploading them in case Nintendo is still doing this. You can’t reupload the original but you can upload the backup.

It took a handful of rewatches to notice, but the checkpoint flags no longer make you Super Mario, so if you're small you stay small.

Hey, also, is there a sprite for Yoshi in SMB1? I ask because apparently he was originally supposed to be in that game, but the technology wasn't there, or Nintendo couldn't work out how to put him in, so he was scrapped/delayed until SMW.

Things that will get an automatic "boo" from me:

- Killing the player at the start.
- Instant death doors/pipes
- Autolevels
- Any New Super Mario Bros themed level that starts with less than 100 on the clock.

I bet I could make a pretty fun instant death pipe level, by framing it as a "one of these things is not like the other" sort of minigame

That's fine, but the generic "Heres four identical pipes with no hint as to which pipe is the correct one, and all but one kill you" is the worst level design and should be punished. Pick a pipe is dumb and should be booed.

So in the direct, the narrator said "once you've unlocked the night versions of themes, you don't have to place the moon course part to use them."

I'm guessing that means we'll be able to use all the night themes without all the crazy extra effects having to be enabled, like windy deserts and upside down underground levels, right?

Ms. Unsmiley

no, it means you don't have to place the moon to get the night effects, because i imagine most creators aren't going to want to give you a way to clear the screen of enemies

At the very least I hope the night effects can be decoupled from the night themes, because those themes are rad as hell and I’d rather not be stuck with effects that change the way the entire level plays just because I want to use Cool Background X that is dark over Cool Background Y that is bright.
